Nashville Sounds pitcher Jimmy Nelson named Milwaukee Brewers Minor League Pitcher of the Year

Jimmy Nelson and Clint Coulter Named Recipients of the Robin Yount Performance Pitcher and Player of the Year Awards, Respectively

Milwaukee BrewersMilwaukee, WI – The Milwaukee Brewers have announced the recipients of the 2014 Robin Yount Performance Awards. Right-handed pitcher Jimmy Nelson was named Brewers Minor League Pitcher of the Year and catcher Clint Coulter was named Brewers Minor League Player of the Year.

Nelson, 25, went 10-2 with a 1.46 ERA in 17 games (16 starts) at Triple-A Nashville, including 114 strikeouts and 32 walks in 111.0 innings. He allowed just three home runs and held opponents to a .179 batting average.

At the time of his promotion to Milwaukee on July 11th, Nelson led the minor leagues in ERA, ranked third in the minors in strikeouts, and tied for the Pacific Coast League lead in wins.

Nelson, who entered the 2014 season as the top prospect in the organization according to Baseball America, was named the PCL’s starting pitcher for the 2014 Triple-A All-Star Game, but did not play due to his big league promotion.

In addition, Nelson was named to the All-PCL Team and was named PCL Pitcher of the Year. In 11 starts with Milwaukee this season, he is 2-7 with a 4.38 ERA, including 52 strikeouts and 18 walks in 63.2 innings pitched.

The Brewers selected Nelson in the second round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft from the University of Alabama.

Coulter, 21, played the entire season at Class-A Wisconsin, where he batted .287 with 22 HR and 89 RBI in 126 games. His 22 homers tied Wisconsin’s single-season HR mark (Khris Davis in 2010 and Victor Roache in 2013) and tied the Midwest League lead.

He led the league in on-base percentage (.410) and hit by pitches (21). Additionally, he ranked among the league leaders in RBI (2nd), slugging percentage (2nd, .520), walks (3rd, 73), runs (T4th, 84), total bases (5th, 223), extra-base hits (5th, 53) and batting average (10th).

Coulter was selected as the starting designated hitter for the Western Division at the 2014 Midwest League All-Star Game and was named as the DH on the league’s Postseason All-Star Team. He was drafted by the Brewers in the first round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Union (WA) High School.
