Peyton Williams wins Mayor’s Golf Tournament, Brad Van Kirk completes Senior Slam

Clarksville, TN – Peyton Williams led wire-to-wire to win the 35th Annual Mayor’s Golf Tournament, Sept. 14th at Swan Lake Golf Course, while Brad Van Kirk completed the Clarksville area Senor Grand Slam by taking the Senior Division title.

For Williams, a freshman on the Trevecca Nazarene University golf team, it’s his first area major title – as he finished with a two-day total of even-par 142 (68-74) to finish two shots ahead of Steven Reigle (73-71=144), while also earning a spot in the Tournament of Champions.

“I’m still kind of speechless,” said Williams of the win. “Since I started play golf in the Clarksville Junior Golf Tour I’ve always wanted to play in the Tournament of Champions, but I’ve never been able too.

“I knew I was close (on points), so I needed to have a good week (to get into the tournament), but to get an exception into it (the TOC) is pretty awesome and a pretty cool feeling.”

Charlie Keene (74-71=145) finished in third place, while Eric Bradley (75-72=147) and Bill Sites (75-73=148) took the fourth and fifth spots respectively in the championship flight.

“Golf is a weekly thing and it comes and goes,” Williams said. “Here lately I’ve been hitting the ball pretty good and I feel pretty confident about my game right now and hopefully I carry some momentum into the TOC.”

In the senior division, Van Kirk (68-67=135) continued his amazing summer by winning the final leg of the Clarksville area grand slam be 10 shots (Wendy’s Invitational, Commanding General’s, Clarksville Senior City Open and Mayor’s Tournament) to sweep all four of the events – shooting even par, or better, in each of the rounds played.

“It’s been one keck of a year and it’s been a lot of fun,” Van Kirk said. “I never thought I would ever put together a run like I have and I’ve never played as well and as consistently for this long in my 43 years of playing this game of golf.

“I’ve put a lot of work into it (my game) and played more golf this year than I have since I was in college and it’s just paid off with me being able to play constantly throughout the year.”

Rich Richardson (70-75=145) and Mike Welker (72-73=145) tied for second place, while Richard Ashbrook (69-77=146) and Joe Hodge (74-72=146) tied for fourth place in the senior division championship flight.

In the other open divisions, Jim Duttweiler (77-73=150) won the first flight, with Greg Guinn (79-72=151) second and Aaron Hayes (81-77=158) third. Josh McWhirter (79-82=161) took fourth and Ron Eldridge (81-81=162) finished in fifth place.

In the Open Division second flight, John Miraglia (85-77=162) took first place, followed by Weston Sartain (90-76=166), Cory Atwood (90-81=171), and Perry Scachetti (88-84=172). Ryan O’Leary (85-91=176) and Ty Koelker (93-83=176) tied for fifth place.

In the other Senior Division flights, Harold Hensley (75-71=146) and Ed Lewis (75-71=146) tied for the top spot, while Steve Blackwell (76-71=147) took third.

Billy Gray (75-74=149), Jimmy Mashburn (75-74=149), Tommy Shearon (76-73=149) and Ronnie Seay (78-71-149) all tied for fourth place.

In the Senior Division second flight, Joe Batey (82-76=158) took top honors, with Mike Bell (80-80-16) second and Mickey Phillips (82-79=161) third.

Terry Trificano (82-80=162) and Pat Vaden (82-80=162) tied for fourth place.
