Erie, PA – After winning the Evann Parker Memorial Tournament two days prior, the Trevecca Women’s Golf team won the Michael Corbett Classic on Monday.
In the first round the Trojans set a school-record with a 310 score. In the second round TNU turned in a 226 for a 636 tournament total.
The Trojans return to action Saturday, September 27th at the NCAA DII National Championship Preview hosted by Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI at The Meadows Golf Course.
Coach Michael Johnson said his top two finishers didn’t have perfect days but didn’t let the bumps get them off course, “Kaylon did a great job of holding her round together today. She made several par-saving and birdie putts. Alexa struggled a little bit, especially early, but held it together and finished with another strong tournament.”
There were 18 teams and 102 golfers participating in the event that was played at the Lake Shore Country Club. The course played to a par of 72 over 5820 yards.
Trevecca won both tournaments by one stroke and Gannon was the second place team each time. Mercyhurst University hosted the Parker Memorial while Gannon hosted the Corbett Classic.
Coach Johnson was grateful for the win, but felt for second place Gannon, “It was great to win both tournaments by one stroke, but I feel for Coach Deets and Gannon because they played well enough to win one or both events.”
In recapping the win today and the trip as a whole, “I believe one reason we were successful, even on courses we were unfamiliar, stems from a growing sense of confidence in our ability to perform at a high level. The truth is, as well as we played, every one of our young ladies feels like they have even more to prove to themselves and our fellow competitors this year. I believe we are developing a winning mentality.”
Trevecca opened the Corbett Classic with a school-record round of 310 and led by 12 strokes. In the second round Trevecca posted a 326, which was good enough to hold off Gannon again by a one stroke for the second tournament in a row.
Marlee Stecker (JR/Dickson, TN) finished 22nd with an 81-82=163. Mikayla Dodson (JR/Sante Fe, TN) shot a 80-88=168 and Lauren Welch (FR/Nashville, TN) carded a 98-93=191.
Kasey Frazier of Wheeling Jesuit and Kayla Linger of West Virginia Wesleyan each carded a 147 to win the tournament.
