Austin Peay State University Governors - APSUToledo, OH – Austin Peay State University men’s golf team struggled through its worst tourney round and slipped to tenth place in the final standings of the Inverness Intercollegiate, Tuesday, at the Inverness Club.

The Govs shot a final round 309 to finish at 918 (308-301-309). East Tennessee (878) held off South Florida (880) for the championship.

“We just couldn’t find it today,” APSU interim coach Dustin Korte said. “We had some costly mistakes as far as course management is concerned. We fought and kept grinding but we just couldn’t get anything going today.”

The Govs recorded seven double bogeys Tuesday after having just one during Monday’s second round. As a result, the 11 birdies made little dent into the final outcome.

Freshman Jonas Vaisanen tied for 16th overall after shooting a final-round 5-over 76 for a 224 total. Junior Austin Kramer had the Govs’ low round Tuesday with a 4-over 75 for a 229 total. Freshman Justin Arens finished up with a 79 (238) while the Govs’ two most experienced performers—senior Tucker Wallace (80) and junior Chris Baker (82)—combined for five double bogeys between them in a long final tourney day.

“A 75 is at best an average score and we are better than that, I truly believe that,” Korte said. “Our doubles today some occurred on the greens and the others on our approach shots. You have to play a certain way and we didn’t.”

Korte is confident the young Governors will use this week’s tournament as a learning experience and will continue to grow as the fall season evolves. The Govs will return to action next Monday when they play at the Cardinal Intercollegiate at the University of Louisville Club.

“We are going to keep getting better and better,” Korte said. “We are still searching for the right lineup and that probably will continue throughout the fall. I already am looking forward to next week.”
