The Lady Hawks hit the field Wednesday with a familiarity and confidence borne from beating the Lady Patriots 2-0 just eight days ago.

Although, the Lady Patriots put up a tough fight early and continued to battle late, the Lady Hawks controlled the pace of most of the game and made the necessary adjustments for a dominating victory.

“We started off a little slow and we weren’t connecting like we’re used to,” Lady Hawks head coach Morgan Zigelsky said. “Towards the end of that first half the girls started figuring out that on their own and that is what we need-them to figure out, not us telling them what to do.”

For the first 13 minutes both teams probed the other’s defenses without success.

In the 14th minute, the Lady Hawks forwards found a weakness in the Lady Patriots defense and put together a series of attacks that resulted in three straight shots. The fourth shot found the net.

In the 19th minute, Kayla Graves received a great assist from Madison Stephens and found herself one-on-one with the Lady Patriots senior goalkeeper, Addi Kate. Graves won the battle with a high kick to the corner of the net for the Lady Hawks first goal.

Unfortunately for the Lady Patriots, Kate found herself in a one-on-one showdown a couple more times before the end of the game. The Lady Hawks generated 10 shots, 7 on goal. Kate made four saves.

The Lady Hawks second goal came with less than three minutes until halftime. A long distance shot attempt hit the goal’s crossbar and stalled directly in front of the goal. Before Kate and an incoming Lady Patriot defender could get to it, it appeared Natalia Castro slipped in and got a foot on the ball for the score.

“At halftime we recollected and talked to them about, defensively, we needed to be a bit sharper, definitely with 1v1 and being tight on their forwards,“ coach Zigelsky said. “They definitely improved in the second half. Getting the shutout was a nice finish to the win.”

The Lady Hawks heeded their coaches advice and increased their defensive pressure to make sure the Lady Patriots could not get in the game. They held the Lady Patriots to five second half shots, only one on goal.

Meanwhile, the defensive pressure also generated more opportunities for the Lady Hawks forwards to generate more offense.

“Our forwards, we have all sorts of girls up there. Everyone got a good chance. It was nice seeing some different girls score that don’t usually score,“ coach Zigelsky said. “At halftime we told them to get wide and cheat forward just because we have an opportunity and it worked. We got some good breakaways and some good finishes.”

Castro just missed the net when she broke away with a one-on-one shot against Kate in the 66th minute, but Avery Sawyer did not miss her attempt when her one-on-one opportunity presented itself in the 69th minute for the Lady Hawks last score.

“Those 1v1’s with the goalie, they are harder than they look. So it was nice to see them finish those,” coach Zigelsky said. “I told them I’m happy how they turned around the second half and we have to come ready to practice tomorrow because we have a good game coming up on Friday.”

On Friday the Lady Hawks will travel to play the Clarksville High Lady Wildcats at 7:00pm.
