Instant Peay Play: Youthful APSU Lady Govs, Governors golf teams looking for consistency with home events looming

Legends Bank, Clarksville TNClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s women’s and men’s golf teams will looking for continued improvement and consistency, as both will play host to their lone home tournament of the year with the 16th Annual F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate.

The Lady Govs will be holding their event at the Clarksville Country Club on October 13th and 14th, while the Governors holding their tournament on October 20th and 21st at The Links at Novadell in Hopkinsville, KY.

“We love to be able to play at home,” Austin Peay coach Sara Robson said. “We have a lot of support from the community and a lot of volunteers to help us out.

“And it’s also good to have their parents here, because a majority of the parents try to make this event, so it’s an exciting event for them (players).”

But more importantly, Robson will be looking for her team to rebound from a 11th-place finish in their last tournament against a field will have a strong Ohio Valley Conference flavor – with Belmont, Murray State, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech participating along with Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne, Lipscomb and Northern Kentucky.

“We have a very talented group, but we’ve have a very up-and-down beginning to our fall season,” Robson said. “But even being talented, they’ve had to learn some things the hard way in the last few weeks.

“We struggled in the first round at Murray (State), but then played well and got some of the bugs and nerves out, but at Jacksonville in that second day there’s no excuse for playing the way we did and the girls took that hard and they’ve responded well the last couple of week and we’re ready to go and are excited.”

Robson will have junior Jessica Cathey, a two-time All-Ohio Valley Conference selection, and senior Meghan Mueller leading the young team with two sophomores, Amber Bosworth and Morgan Kauffman and freshman, AnnaMichelle Moore, comprise the lineup.

The Lady Govs will have sophomores Kelsey Schutt and Morgan Gardner and freshmen Anna Pope and Sarah Beth Struble will play as individuals in the event.

“Jessica is going to play well for us and Mehgan has had a great fall,” Robson said. “They’re going to lead us, but we just need to go out and relax and enjoy ourselves.

“We play our best golf when we relax and enjoy ourselves and let our game speak for itself.”

The two-day 36-hole Lady Govs event will begin with an 8:00am-9:30am tee time, while the final round will open with an 8:30am shotgun start.

The public is invited to watch the tournament free of charge.

As for the Governors, they have a little work to do before they host their tournament, as they travel to Bowling Green, KY this week for the Western Kentucky University Kenny Perry Invitational.

“These are two tournament that we need to play well in,” Govs interim coach Dustin Korte said. “It’s about time to start showing improvement and we had a little bit of that last week in Louisville (KY) and we just need to gain on that.”

The Govs fourth-place finish in Louisville was their best of the fall and Korte hopes they wrap-up their final two tournaments building confidence and momentum heading into the winter break, as their four freshmen (Justin Arens, Colton Godwin, Luis Navarrete and Jonas Vaisanen) continue to acclimate their play from high school to college.

“I think we really made some headway at Louisville, but there’s some serious room for improvement,” Korte said. “If we can get that accomplished we can be pretty good by the end of the season.

“People say you have to have the players and that is true. But we not only have the players we also have the ability to get better throughout this whole season.”

Rounding out the Govs roster is senior Tucker Wallace, juniors Austin Kramer and Chris Baker and sophomore Erik Hedberg.

“Part of being a good team is putting yourself in the position we were in Louisville (the final team grouping), so the next time you’re going to do better – you might not win – but you might do better the next time and the next time until you’re a good team,” Korte said. “We’re super young, but we’re excited about how hard they’re all working and right now it’s a very positive note and I think we’ll see some real improvement the next two tournaments.”
