Needing to find points after starting the Ohio Valley Conference slate 1-2, Austin Peay (4-9-0, 3-2-0 OVC) got a pair of stellar performances from junior Nikki Filippone in net to avert a potential crisis and find its footing in the OVC race.

After two shutouts and 13 saves on the weekend, Filippone was named OVC Goalkeeper of the Week – her first career honor and the first for an Austin Peay netminder since 2012.

APSU's Shelby OlszewskiThe Lady Govs got a boost in the form of Shelby Olszewski last weekend. The junior, who had missed the season’s first 11 games due to injury, returned last weekend, starting both matches and playing 89 minutes. Her versatility could be a huge factor for a young Austin Peay squad that has put as many as five freshmen on the field at the same time in 2014.

Jacksonville State (8-6-0, 3-2-0 OVC) is locked in a battle with the Lady Govs and Southeast Missouri for the final two spots in the tournament field – a win would give Austin Peay the tie-breaker against both. The Gamecocks have a potent, balanced offensive attack, leading the OVC in goals (38) and goals per game (2.71) entering the weekend.

APSU's Frankie CarbajalThree Jacksonville State players – Courtney Hurt (21 points, fourth), Kelsey Bright (19, fifth) and Jackie Rush (17, tied for sixth) – rank in the top six in the OVC in scoring.

Tennessee Tech (2-10-1, 0-4-1 OVC) is the only OVC squad currently winless in conference play, so the Golden Eagles will come to Clarksville eager to rectify the situation. Rebecca Toler has been busy in net for Tennessee Tech – her 70 saves ranks her fourth in the OVC entering the weekend. She’s had to be stingy in net, since the Golden Eagles have scored just eight goals in 14 matches this season.

Sunday’s match also doubles as Senior Day for the Lady Govs – Claire Pultz and Frankie Carbajal will be honored for their contributions to the program prior to the match.

Last Time Against This Weekend’s Opponents

Austin Peay blanked both these squads in 2013, opening OVC road play with a 5-0 win at Tennessee Tech, October 4th, 2013, behind a Tatiana Ariza hat trick. Gina Fabbro and Andy Quiceno also scored for Austin Peay and Filippone made two saves for her first full clean sheet.

Fabbro, Ariza and Quiceno each scored a goal in the Lady Govs 3-0 win against the Gamecocks, October 27th, 2013, while Filippone made four saves in the shutout effort. Jacksonville State could muster only four total shots, compared to 18 for Austin Peay’s offense.

All-time, the Lady Govs are 5-4-2 against Jacksonville State, and are unbeaten against the Gamecocks since 2009. In home matches the Lady Govs are 4-0-1 all-time against Jacksonville State. The Lady Govs are 4-8-0 against Tennessee Tech in the series, winners of three of the last four.

Keep An Eye On

  • APSU's Claire PultzFabbro has scored four goals in five OVC contests (tied for third in the OVC during league play) and five overall in 2014. With two more goals, she will tie Jessica Hosse (2004-07) and Emily Perkins (2011-12) for fourth all-time with 14 career goals, and two more goals this season will give her seven, tied for sixth-best in a single-season in APSU history.
  • With nine more saves, Filippone will tie Carley Newman (2010) and Haylee Shoaff (2011) for 10th-best in a single-season with 65. Ten saves will tie her with Michelle Smith (2006-08) for fourth in career stops with 126.
  • Both junior Courtney Sheppard and senior Claire Pultz need two assists to break into the top-10 all-time. Pultz’s next assist will tie her with a multitude of Lady Govs for ninth on the single-season lists with four helpers.
