APSU Lady Govs Volleyball impressive in four set win over Jacksonville State Gamecocks

Austin Peay Sports Information

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUClarksville, TN – Thirteen proved lucky for Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team as freshman Ashley Slay and seniors Jada Stotts and Hillary Plybon each posted 13 kills in a four-set (26-24, 25-20, 19-25, 25-19) Ohio Valley Conference victory against Jacksonville State, Saturday, at the Dunn Center.

While the Plybon-Slay-Stotts trio stole the limelight, it was Austin Peay’s depth that came to the forefront with three players – junior Samantha Strother had nine kills while senior Liz Landon and junior Aubrey Marsellis had six kills each.

Jacksonville State did have four players reach double-digit kill territory, but had only two players score kills outside of that quartet. Charis Ludtke led the Gamecocks with 15 kills while Emily Rutherford added 13 kills. Allyson Zuhlk and Nicole Merget had 10 kills each.

APSU's Cami Fields“I have to give a lot of credit to (setters) Cami (Fields) and Aubrey (Marsellis),” said Lady Govs head coach Taylor Mott. “They did an incredible job of mixing up the offense today. There were times I wasn’t entirely sure where they were going with the ball, but they made the right call a lot of the time. It was encouraging to see us execute a little different game plan today and have it work so well.”

The first set was the most closely fought of the match with neither team holding more than a four-point advantage.

APSU's Aubrey MarsellisAustin Peay would take a 24-21 lead, but could not convert on three consecutive set points as Jacksonville State got a kill from Rutherford, a block and a service ace to tie the set. However, Austin Peay scored the final two points, including a set-sealing kill by Slay, for the 26-24 win.

Austin Peay opened the second set with a 4-0 run but gave all of that lead back and trailed 8-7. The Lady Govs did not allow the Gamecocks to extend that lead and used a 4-0 run to build an 18-13 lead, as Plybon, Strother and Stotts each had kills during the run.

APSU's Jada StottsJacksonville State would fight back briefly, again fending off a trio of set points, but Marsellis’ kill ended the set, 25-20.

Jacksonville State controlled the third set nearly wire to wire. Austin Peay would tie the set at 9-9 after a Plybon kill, but JSU scored 10 of the next 15 points to build its largest lead of the match, 19-15. An APSU error followed by a Ludtke kill ended the set with the Gamecocks winning, 25-19.

The fourth set saw Austin Peay jump out to an 11-7 lead thanks to a six consecutive points while Plybon was serving, including a pair of service aces.

APSU's Hillary PlybonJacksonville State responded with a 6-2 run to tie the set, 13-13, but could not grab the lead. A Strother kill ignited a 4-0 run to give APSU an 18-15 lead and it cruised to the 25-19 match-sealing victory.

Plybon continued to play well following her return to the lineup last Friday, posting a third-straight double-digit kill total (13) while hitting .462. Slay posted season highs in kills (13) and blocks (8) while finishing with a .370 attack percentage. Stotts chipped in 13 kills and four blocks while hitting .154.

APSU's Ashley SlayAustin Peay finished with 61 kills and won both halves of the defensive battle, claiming a 79-77 edge in digs while posting an impressive 12-6.5 margin in blocks.

Jacksonville State recorded 52 kills but was held to a .184 attack percentage.

Austin Peay, which climbed to fourth play in the OVC standings, closes regular season play with a four-match OVC road trip. The Lady Govs begin that excursion with a 6:30pm, Friday contest at Southeast Missouri.
