Austin Peay State University Women’s Cross Country come in eighth at OVC Championships

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUOxford, AL – Austin Peay State University women’s cross country team placed eighth at the 2014 Ohio Valley Conference Championships, hosted by UT Martin, at Oxford Lake and Recreation Center.

The Lady Govs were paced by junior Jessica Gray‘s 25th place finish with an 18:28.46 mark on the five-kilometer course. Gray improved upon her previous personal record, earned on the same course in the JSU Foothills Invitational, held on October 4th, by 32 seconds.

Gray was followed by sophomore Molly Jordan (39th, 18:55.11) and freshman Sarah-Emily Woodward (51st, 19:17.88).

The scoring five for the Lady Govs were wrapped up by freshman Becca Wheeler (58th, 19:38.77) and sophomore Unjala Lester (63rd, 19:55.01).

Also competing for the Lady Govs were freshman Sarah Carpenter (70th, 20:19.28) and junior Aleiha Romero (75th, 20:47.82).

“This group keeps on getting better and better as time goes on,” said head coach Doug Molnar.  “Six of our eight runners set personal records today.  With everybody coming back I’m very pleased with our growth and our effort today. ”

Eastern Kentucky won its third consecutive women’s championship and its 28th overall title with a score of 19. Eastern Illinois (78) claimed second place, while Belmont (86) took third place.  Southeast Missouri (95) and Murray State (144) rounded out the top-five.

Morehead State (154) and SIU Edwardsville (191) finished ahead of the Lady Govs.  Jacksonville State (274), Tennessee Tech (314), UT Martin (324) and Tennessee State (340) rounded out the field.

The Lady Govs return to action at the NCAA South Regional held November 14th, in Tallahassee, FL.
