Austin Peay Sports Information
Clarksville, TN – In honor of Veterans Day, Austin Peay State University’s athletics department started auctioning off 101 camouflage jerseys on its website at 11:00am (CT) today, November 11th. The auction can be accessed at www.LetsGoPeay.com/Auctions and will be available through Wednesday, November 26th.
The time and date of the auction’s start is significant as it harkens back to the origins of Veterans Day – Armistice Day which commemorated the end of World War I, with an armistice that took effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.
In addition, the auction’s net proceeds will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary of service. The WWP’s purpose is to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members; to help injured service members aid and assist each other and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members.
As part of Military Appreciation Day and to honor Fort Campbell, APSU chose to wear special camouflage jerseys, donated by Russell Athletic®, for the occasion. The camouflage jerseys had the respective Fort Campbell unit nicknames across the upper back. Using those nicknamed jerseys was in violation of NCAA Rule 1, Article 5 regarding proper numerals and lettering. For every quarter Austin Peay wore those jerseys, the Govs were assessed a timeout.
“Our football team was honored to wear these jerseys Saturday,” said athletics director Derek van der Merwe. “It is our honor to place these jerseys, generously donated by Russell Athletic, up for auction to benefit our wounded soldiers and veterans. This military appreciation effort has been an educational opportunity to our entire program to understand and respect the value of the great people of Fort Campbell in our Clarksville community. We hope the total effect of our effort is to increase awareness of those men and women who volunteer their time and in some cases their lives to protect our freedom.”
