Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan’s message for Veterans Day

City of Clarksville - Clarksville, TNClarksville, TN – For most of us, Veteran’s Day is a day of special meaning. I believe that’s especially true for those of us who call Clarksville, Tennessee our home.

Every day we see men and women in uniform working and volunteering in our community. There are also hundreds of people who have stayed in Clarksville after their active-duty years and who continue to make our community richer.

We have always known that each of them, and their families, make Clarksville stronger through their courage and commitment.

This year, we had the opportunity to prove just how much they mean to us.

As most of you know, the Army is considering a budget-required drawdown of some of the troops stationed at Fort Campbell. Over the summer, a group of community leaders including the Chamber of Commerce, Austin Peay State University, the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System, the Economic Development Council, the County Mayor and I, worked together to prepare a response to the Army.

We pulled together our resources and our ideas and, hopefully, presented a clear picture of how important the relationship between our Fort Campbell soldiers and our community really is.

As a part of that process, we asked you to participate. You stepped up just like we knew you would. Hundreds of letters were sent to Washington as proof of our community’s dedication to our soldiers.

What became obvious to anyone who didn’t already know is that our soldiers and veterans are appreciated and valued tremendously. Yes, we admire their willingness to go to places like West Africa to take on an invisible but deadly enemy in the Ebola virus. We watch with pride as they return from war to reunite with their families. We count on their bravery and depend on their unselfishness.

Every time we see those who serve today, we are reminded of those that went before. They fought, they survived, and they led. In our community, they still do.

On this Veteran’s Day, I know that all of Clarksville joins me in thanking every man and woman who has worn a uniform for their contributions to our nation and for helping to make Clarksville the very best place to live, work and raise our families.
