Northwest Lady Vikings Basketball pulls away in second half versus Maplewood for season’s first win

Northwest High School VikingsClarksville, TN – Northwest High School’s girls basketball team broke open a three-point contest, November 20th at the Willard Ross Memorial Gymnasium, with a 22-point third quarter to power them to a 70-54 victory over Maplewood High School.

The Lady Vikings (1-4) only led by three points, 35-32, at intermission, but scored 16 of the first 20 points of the second half to build a 51-36 lead with 2:38 left in the period.

After Maplewood (0-3) got a basket from Destiny Hayes to open the second half, Taylor Senseney would start a 10-0 run for Northwest with a bucket of her own at the 7:13 mark, followed by two free throws by Akiya Brown, back-to-back baskets from Jashia Huey and finally a basket by Senseney to end the run with 5:14 to build their biggest lead of the game, 45-36.

Huey would lead Northwest in scoring, with 23 points, while Senseney added 15 points.

Maplewood wouldn’t get any closer than nine points the rest of the away in the third quarter, before the Lady Vikings took a 13-point advantage into the final quarter, 57-44.

Northwest wouldn’t take its foot off the gas petal in the final stanza, as the Lady Vikings extended its lead out to as many as 18 points, 68-50 with 1:44 left in the game, before coming away with their first win of the season, 70-54.

In the first half, the two teams would trade the lead back-and-fourth six times in the opening quarter, including the final time at 14-13 when Northwest took the lead for good at the 1:09 mark of the opening quarter on a basket from Skyler Dixon, before holding a 17-13 advantage after the first eight minutes of play.

The Lady Panthers would try to battle back in the second quarter, knocking down three 3s in the first 2:58 of the period to tie the game for the final time, 24-24 at the 5:02 mark, but three straight baskets by Megan Thompson would give the Lady Vikings a 30-24 advantage and a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish.

Thompson would finish with 14 points on the night.

Northwest returns to action November 21st, with a road game at LaVergne High School, while its next home game is scheduled for November 25th versus Hendersonville High School. Both games are 6:00pm starts.
