LBL’s Recycling Program receives a Boost

Land Between the Lakes - LBLGolden Pond, KY – Personnel Truck Leasing of Murray, Kentucky, has donated a 48-foot, dry van trailer to Friends of Land Between The Lakes.

The trailer will be used to store and transport recyclable materials to processing centers as part of the recycling program conducted by the U.S. Forest Service at Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area. Friends of Land Between The Lakes also thanks Paschal Truck Lines of Murray for their assistance in acquiring this donation.

John Rufli, Executive Director of Friends of Land Between The Lakes, received the donation from David Graham of Paschall Trucking Lines on behalf of the Forest Service.

“Currently, visitors to Land Between The Lakes can recycle plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and steel cans at several locations. In the future, we hope to be able collect more types of materials, such as paper and cardboard, from visitors as we solve challenges surrounding collection and transport. This generous gift from Personnel Truck Leasing and Paschall Trucking Lines will help expand our recycling efforts,” said Rufli.

“This donation resolves several challenges we’ve had in dealing with waste paper and cardboard generated in the operations of the Recreation Area. Last year we recycled 4,000 pounds of cardboard and 4,700 pounds of paper. This large trailer will reduce the amount of material handling and allow for fewer trips to the recycling center, enabling us to recycle even more materials that would otherwise get thrown away,” said Darrin Samborski, Environmental Education Specialist at Land Between The Lakes. “I also want to thank Trigg County Road Department for helping transport the trailer from Paschall Trucking Lines to our location.”

Land Between The Lakes is a member of a multi-county partnership called West Kentucky Regional Recycling Corporation that formed in the 1990s to divert several materials from local landfills. Caldwell, Crittenden, Livingston, Lyon, and Trigg counties, Land Between The Lakes, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the West Kentucky Correctional Complex all participate. Residents of these counties and visitors to Land Between The Lakes participate in this recycling program.

“In 2012, West Kentucky Regional Recycling Corporation recycled nearly 895,000 pounds of material including cardboard, paper, aluminum, plastic, and glass,” said Casey Major, recycling program manager at Western Kentucky Correctional Complex.

Improved technology has made it possible to utilize materials once considered trash. Products made from recycled materials have improved in quality. Land Between The Lakes anticipates an increase in their ability to recycle as a result of Personnel Truck Leasing and Paschall Trucking Lines’ generous donation.

Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area manages more than 170,000 acres in western Kentucky and Tennessee as part of the U.S. Forest Service and the Department of Agriculture’s public lands program. Land Between The Lakes offers outdoor recreation, lake access, land management, and environmental education to over 1.4 million visitors annually.

The Friends of Land Between The Lakes works in partnership with the Forest Service providing program services, funds development, and volunteer support.
