Cookeville, TN – A valiant comeback attempt came up three minutes short as Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team suffered its first Ohio Valley Conference loss, 75-71, to Tennessee Tech, Saturday at the Eblen Center.
The Lady Govs started chipping away at that deficit, first with an 8-0 run sparked by four points from juniors Jennifer Nwokocha and Tiasha Gray to trim it to five points, 41-36, with 16:58 left.
The Lady Govs then used an 11-3 run over 2:49 to take its first lead. Gray hit a three-pointer to start the run then sophomore Jacey Scott scored eight consecutive points to give APSU a 49-48 lead with 11:03 remaining.
Austin Peay held that advantage and extended it to four points, 63-59, on Gray’s jumper with 6:55 left. The Lady Govs then nursed that lead and held a 68-66 advantage after another Scott three-pointer with 3:26 left.
However, Scott’s field goal would be the last Austin Peay would make for over three minutes. Tennessee Tech scored the next four points and Candace Parson’s jumper at the 1:25 mark put TTU ahead for good.
Austin Peay went 1-for-4 at the free-throw line during that Tennessee Tech run. The Golden Eagles converted on three of their four free-throw shots in the final 14 seconds to secure their lead.
Tennessee Tech (5-12, 2-2 OVC) scored the game’s first eight points and led by 12 points, 18-6, less than five minutes into the contest. Austin Peay slashed that lead to four points as Gray and freshman Brianne Alexander combined for the game’s next eight points. That was as close as Austin Peay would get in the opening frame and Tennessee Tech scored the half’s final five points to lead 37-26 at the break.
Austin Peay was held to 39 percent (27-of-69) shooting for the contest and was 9-of-12 (75 percent) at the free-throw line.
Tennessee Tech countered with 43 percent (24-of-56) shooting and a 21-of-31 (67.7 percent) effort from the free-throw line.
Parson and Hannah Goolsby each scored 16 points to pace Tennessee Tech.
Austin Peay returns home for a quick three-game homestand that will last five days.
The Lady Govs will start that stand with a 5:15pm., Thursday contest against Belmont.
