Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day Message

City of Clarksville - Clarksville, TNClarksville, TN – Today, many of us will gather in memory, celebration and service as we observe the contributions made through the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. King was a man who could inspire thousands with his words and millions with his actions.

One of my favorite quotes is this:

“Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve….You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
Martin Luther King, Jr

Public service is the career I chose and it is an honor to have served the people of Clarksville for more than twenty years. We’ve accomplished a lot together and I’m excited about continuing to work side-by-side with you for the next four years. There is no other community with the heart, grace and soul of Clarksville.

The people who serve on every one of the City’s boards and commissions so generously give of their time and energy. The men and women who volunteer to coach sports teams and mentor our youth make a tremendous difference for our future. And, of course, the soldiers who live in our community give their all for our safety and security without question or hesitation.

Yes, Clarksville is a city that exemplifies Dr. King’s challenge to serve. It is one of the reasons that Clarksville is the very best place to live, work and raise our families.

Thank you for joining me today to reflect on the words and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
