Clarksville, TN – The middle school basketball season came to a close and day 1 of the girls Area 1-AAA Tournament tipped off Thursday afternoon at Kenwood High School. Eight teams played each other and only four teams advanced with a chance to claim the tournament championship.
In the first two games, the top two seeds dominated their opponents. First, the #1 Dickson Lady Dragons smothered the #8 Montgomery Central Lady Indians, 48-12. Then, the #2 Kenwood Lady Knights skewered the #7 New Providence Lady Mustangs 45-10.
Lady Dragons 48 Lady Indians 12
The Lady Dragons set the tone of their game with aggressive defense from the tip off. They generated 10 turnovers and held the Lady Indians to zero points in the first quarter. Conversely, their offense was red hot, shooting 8-of-14 from the field and outscoring the Lady Indians 24-0.
The Lady Indians attempted only six field goals in the first half and no free throws. They were held to five or less points in each of the last three quarters. Only three Lady Indians scored in the game.
With the win, the Lady Dragons advanced to play the Sycamore Lady Knights Tuesday, January 27th.
Lady Knights 45 Lady Mustangs 10
Game two of the Area 1-AAA girls basketball tournament was very similar to game one. The Kenwood Lady Knights full court press overwhelmed the New Providence Lady Mustangs.
The Lady Mustangs committed nine turnovers and were held to just three points in the first period. They scored only seven points the rest of the game.
The Lady Knights opened the game with an 11-2 run and outscored the Lady Mustangs 18-3 in the first quarter. Sydnee Boykin scored 12 of those 18 points. Boykin finished the game leading all scorers with 21 points.
Boykin was one of six Lady Knights to score in the game. Kimia Carter scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. LaVana Pridgen added six points.
Only four Lady Mustangs scored in the game. Both Asia Hall and Travasia Thibodaux scored three points. Next, the Lady Knights will play the Rossview Lady Hawks Tuesday, January 27th.
