Clarksville, TN – Kenwood High School found itself down 15 points to Clarksville High School after one quarter, Friday, January 23rd at William Workman Gymnasium, but rallied over the final three periods to come away with a 57-51 District 10-AAA victory.
With the win, Kenwood (14-7, 7-3 District 10-AAA) remains tied for the top spot in the district standings with Northwest High School – who defeated West Creek High School 71-61 – while CHS (9-10, 6-4 District 10-AAA) drops to third-place.
But the Knights would get their offense untracked in the second quarter, scoring eight of the first nine points of the period; including four from Angel Hall, to get the Wildcats lead back under 10 points, 22-14, with 4:32 left before intermission.
Two free throws by JJ Jones, followed by a three-point play by Tyriek Cheatham would help get the Clarksville High lead back to 11 points, 27-16, with 1:48 left in the quarter.
Jones would lead the Wildcats in scoring with 15 points.
But Kenwood closed out the quarter by scoring the final seven points of the first half – while the Wildcats missed the front end of two one-and-ones over that stretch – to allow the Knights, who once trailed by 15 points, to only trail by four at halftime, 27-23.
The second half would see Clarksville High score the first five points of the third quarter to extend its lead back out to nine points, 32-23 as the 6:23 mark, but they would only score two more points the rest of the period.
Kenwood on the other hand would score 12 points over the final 5:58 of the quarter – including two free throw by Kyrus Newman with 1:27 left, to give the Knights their first lead of the game, 35-34, as they headed into the final quarter.
The four quarter would start with the two teams trading basket back-and-fourth until two missed free throw by Kenwood allowed Clarksville High to tie the game, 43-43 with 4:18 left, on two free throw by Teal Young.
They would trade the next two baskets to tie the game for the final time, 45-45 with 3:33 left, but the Knights would run off the next six points – including four from Matthew Norl – to build its biggest lead of the game, 51-45 with 2:19 left.
A basket by Avery Bates would get the Wildcats back to within four points, 51-47 with two minutes left in the game, but that would be as close as they would get with Tyree Boykin hitting six free throw attempts in the final 58.6 seconds of the game to seal away the victory for Kenwood.
