Austin Peay State University Governors Basketball falls to Murray State Racers

Austin Peay State University Governors - APSUMurray, KY – Cameron Payne missed his first five shots of the first half against Austin Peay State University but once the odds-on favorite to capture the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year found the range, the Govs had no answer.

Payne connected on five straight field goals to end the half, including a quartet of three pointers, to lift Murray State to an 89-54 decision, Saturday afternoon, in OVC men’s basketball action played at the CFSB Center.

The loss eliminates the Governors from any OVC tourney qualifying hopes while Murray State improved to 24-4 overall and 14-0 in the OVC.

Payne’s sluggish start gave APSU some early hope but the Govs had trouble corralling Jonathan Fairell inside—he had nine first-half points—and T.J. Sapp outside—he knocked down a pair of three pointers.

But once Payne got hot a somewhat manageable eight-point deficit became a 47-25 halftime hole as Payne’s fourth three pointer came at the first-half buzzer. Despite his slow start, he finished the half with 17 points.

Any hope for any type of APSU comeback evaporated in the opening minutes of the second half as the Racers built an insurmountable 32-point lead against the offensively-challenged Governors.

APSU’s shooting woes continued to the tone of 33.4 percent shooting (18 of 54), including just 2-of-11 three-pointers. It was the 19th time this season and 12th time in OVC games the Govs shot less than 40 percent from the floor.

Chris Freeman, Khalil Davis and Josh Robinson each had 12 points for the Govs, who fell to 2-11 in league play and 7-20 overall.

Payne, who played more of a facilitator role in the second half, led five Murray State players in double figures with 22 points, including 5-of-8 from three-point range. The Racers were 31 of 64 (48 percent) from the floor but a scorching 11-of-22 (50 percent) from three-point range.
