Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUCharleston, IL – The Ohio Valley Conference is a tough conference. That was evident in the results of Saturday’s OVC Championships.

Austin Peay State University finished fifth out of the 10 schools, scoring 82 points to place just behind Eastern Kentucky, which had 88. Eastern Illinois (132.5 points) took home the title, followed by Tennessee State (101) and Southeast Missouri (98.5).

Murray State (54), SIU Edwardsville (43), Belmont (40) and Jacksonville State (24) rounded out the scoring.

“This conference is not going to give you anything,” said head coach Doug Molnar. “I thought coming in we’d score between 80 and 90 points and we were right there. Our biggest thing was health and we’re still a couple of weeks from being there.”

Junior Breigh Jones had a decorated afternoon. Surprising precisely no one, she took home the gold medal in the 400m dash with a 55.57 mark, then added silver in the 200m (24.88) before rounding out her day by joining senior Jessica Gray, junior Michaela McGhee and sophomore Terri Morris with a silver-medal winning 3:50.16 4x400m relay.

All told, Jones was responsible as an individual or relay participant for 26 of Austin Peay’s points.

Gray also had a solid showing as an individual, earning a silver medal and the eight points that accompanies it thanks to a personal-best 2:12.18 run in the 800m event.

After setting the school record in Friday’s qualifying, senior Erika Adams didn’t let that record stand long, lowering the 60m mark yet again with a 7.61 mark in the finals, earning bronze in the process after qualifying in seventh.

Austin Peay placed two athletes on the podium in the triple jump. Sophomore Kaylnn Pitts took home the silver with a 12.22m mark, while classmate Chancis Jones added to her trophy case with a 12.18m leap that earned her bronze – the same medal Jones won in Friday’s long jump.

Five of Austin Peay’s points came in the 60m hurdles, with Myiah Johnson (personal-best 8.62, fifth) and Amia Butler (8.77, eighth) adding to the final tally.

Joining Jones in the 200m final, junior Lamontra Robinson placed seventh and picked up two points with a 25.86 run.

With a 3.06m pole vault mark, freshman Gretchen Rosch picked up three points with a sixth-place finish, which she earned thanks to winning a jump-off in the event.

“I thought our jumpers did a great job,” Molnar said. “Breigh was her usual outstanding self. Erika Adams basically missed a month, came back last week and this week, she finishes third in the conference. Hopefully by the time the outdoor championships roll around at our place, we’ll be completely healthy and ready to go.”
