Rossview Lady Hawks State Tournament Quest Stopped by Dickson County Lady Cougars

Rossview High School HawksDickson, TN – The Rossview Lady Hawks went to Dickson County High School Monday night looking to earn a spot in the state tournament for the second year in a row. After a slow start put them at a 15-point deficit by halftime, the Lady Hawks mounted a furious comeback in the second half with a chance to win and achieve their goal.

However, the Lady Hawks comeback fell short and the Dickson County Lady Cougars won the Class AAA Sectional, 59-52.

From the tip off, almost everything went right for the Lady Cougars offensively. They scored inside and out, converting baskets from seemingly anywhere on the court.

After Mickey Head made a basket in the post to give the Lady Hawks the only lead they would have all game, 4-2, the Lady Cougars went on a 12-0 run.

By the end of the first quarter, they had outscored the Lady Hawks 16-8, and their offense only got hotter in the second. The Lady Cougars made five of their first six shots from the field in the second quarter

The clock was at 6:38 in the second when Lady Cougar Carlee Wilson made a 3-pointer to put her team ahead 23-10. At the five minute mark, LeaLea Carter made back-to-back baskets and a free throw to give the Lady Cougars their biggest lead, 31-12.

“I think you have to give them a little bit of credit, the way they started the game,” Lady Hawks head coach Justin Woods said. “I don’t know what their percentage was but it seemed like they were just shooting lights out in the first quarter.”

“They kind of got us back on our heels. I thought once we had time to take a deep breath and get our legs back under us, I thought we started competing and playing.”

The Lady Hawks built some momentum offensively at the end of the second quarter. They outscored the Lady Cougars 12-8 in the third to cut the lead down to 11 points, 43-32.

“In the second half, out goal was to cut the lead in half by the end of the third. We cut into a little bit but didn’t quite get what we wanted,” coach Woods said. “Then, in the first three minutes of the fourth we cut it to five. It was a dog fight from there. We ran out of time.”

The Lady Hawks opened the final quarter with a 9-2 run. The red hot shooting of the Lady Cougars early in the game went cold in the fourth. The Lady Hawks capitalized on the missed shots, crashing the boards on both ends to get extra scoring opportunities.

The Lady Hawks out-rebounded the Lady Cougars 16-8 in the second half. Jemiah Harrison and Semajia Ogburn combined for 10 of those rebounds.

With 2:30 remaining, Ogburn made a put back that put the Lady Hawks within five of the Lady Cougars, 47-52, but that would be as close as the Lady Hawks would get.

Payton Grove converted a clutch three-point play with a minute left on the clock to put the Lady Eagles up by nine points. The Lady Hawks last score was a three-pointer made by Mickey Head. Carter made a free throw for the Lady Cougars last score. She also pulled down the rebound and avoided being fouled after a Lady Hawks missed three-point attempt to end the game.

Grove led all scorers with 18 points. She was one of four Lady Cougars to score double-digit points. Carter filled the stat sheet with 15 points, four rebounds and three blocks.

Seven Lady Hawks scored in the game. Head led the way with 14 points, including eight in the fourth quarter. Haley Croom scored 11 points.

The Lady Cougars (32-2) advanced and will play Bearden 10 a.m. Wednesday in Murfreesboro in the quarterfinals of the Class AAA State Tournament. The Lady Hawks end their season 23-8.

“I’m so proud of my team. I’m always proud to say I am the coach of the Rossview Lady Hawks. They didn’t disappoint me tonight. We just came up a little short,” coach Woods said.
