Winter Storm Warning issued for Clarksville – Montgomery County

National Weather ServiceNashville, TN – The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm warning for 3 to 5 inches of snow with some light ice accumulation for Clarksville-Montgomery County which is in effect from 3:00pm Wednesday until 9:00am CST Thursday.

The winter storm watch is no longer in effect.

A strong upper level low pressure system will bring plenty of rain this evening and overnight followed by mixed precipitation and finally snow later in the day Wednesday.

As the cold front passes overnight into the day Wednesday, precipitation will switch from rain to a mix of freezing rain, to sleet and snow during the late afternoon and early evening hours and finally to all snow from northwest to southeast overnight.

Snowfall and sleet accumulations may be between 2 to 5 inches with freezing rain causing ice accumulation around a tenth of an inch as well. Major travel impacts are expected to develop Wednesday evening as the wintry precipitation spreads over the area.

In fact, major travel impacts will likely last all the way into Friday afternoon since temperatures are expected to remain below the freezing mark Thursday and much of Friday. Low temperatures in many areas Friday morning are expected to reach the single digits.

3 to 5 inches are possible with the highest amounts closer to the Kentucky state line and lowest amounts near Interstate 40. Freezing rain accumulations may be around a tenth of an inch.

Precipitation will mainly be rain in the morning, then mix with freezing rain and sleet during the early afternoon. Snow should develop during the mid to late afternoon. This mixed precipitation will create major travel impacts from Wednesday afternoon through Friday afternoon.

Temperatures are likely to stay below freezing from Wednesday night through mid day Friday. This will likely keep many roadways slick and hazardous for an extended period of time.

A winter storm warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.

Counties Affected

Cheatham County, Dickson County, Houston County, Humphreys County, Montgomery County, Robertson County, and Stewart County.
