The March Art Walk will be held March 12th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at the shops and galleries on Public Square, Franklin Street, and Strawberry Alley.

The participating businesses are listed below as well as a description of the work they will be exhibiting and services they will be offering during the event.

The Downtown Artists Co-op (96 Franklin Street)

The DAC is an association of talented local artists and interested patrons dedicated to promoting the visual arts in the Clarksville-Montgomery County area.

Our objectives are to sponsor art exhibitions of work by Co-op members and regional artists, to provide continuing support for the Co-op and its membership through the sale of art work, to encourage arts education with outreach programs and scholarship fundraisers, and to develop membership services which directly support the arts community.

Artist Information:

Downtown Artists Co-op (DAC) is proud to announce an exhibit of fine art entitled “Inner Moment” by Laura Blair. The opening reception for Inner Moment will be on March 12th from 5:00pm till 8:00pm.

Laura Blair graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Studio Art, concentration in Painting, and a minor in Art History. After painting throughout childhood using primarily watercolor, Laura Blair took her first class in oil painting at the University, where she later excelled in building and creating large-scale oil paintings.

She also studied Interior Design while at Alabama, and has since used that knowledge to influence her paintings, specifically commissioned work. Fellow artists and previous professors have described her work as abstract, expressionist, cubist, saturated and dramatic.

She first exhibited her paintings at the Capstone student show in 2009 and 2010, and two years later she had her first dual show with one other artist at the Harrison Galleries in Tuscaloosa Alabama.

She was a member of the Tennessee Art League in 2013 while also showing her work at The “O” Gallery in Nashville. More recently, she has joined the Downtown Artist Co-Op in Clarksville TN where she exhibits much of her work.

Laura Blair’s background in painting, drawing, color theory, lighting, and design make her a unique artist that understands how to create bold artwork that not only complements a space but engages the viewer.

The Downtown Artists Co-op will also be participating in the “Winter Clear Out Sale” taking place in Historic Downtown Clarksville. F&M Bank (50 Franklin Street)

Artist Information:

F&M Bank proudly hosts the work of local artist, Larry Martin on the 5th Floor in the Franklin Room.

Richly colored jazz paintings, bold and dynamic abstracts, cool and serene landscapes, peaceful and sometimes stormy seascapes, sunrise. sunset, strange and odd combinations that pop! These are some of the varied subject matter that Larry presents in oil, acrylic and watercolor mediums.

“Having been a never-gave-up-my-day-job musician, playing in bands and piano bars from Boston to Bangkok for most of my adult life, I was initially drawn to Jazz renditions, and later got into abstracts, landscapes, seascapes and Florals. I say that painting is kind of like playing bridge, another of my retirement pastimes – I became a Bronze Life Master in 2012. Each painting, like each bridge hand, is different and you never play the same hand or paint the same painting twice. That’s what keeps you coming back, the challenge of creation and the belief that it will be worth it. I hope you enjoy my art as much as I enjoyed creating it!”

The Framemaker (705 North Second Street)

Artist Information:

La Mia Roma

Photography by Dr. Tammy Smithers

The Framemaker proudly presents ”La Mia Roma” a photography exhibit by Dr. Tammy Smithers. The exhibit is part of Clarksville’s First Thursday Art Walk on March 12th, 2015. An opening reception will be held from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. The artwork will remain on display at the Framemaker throughout the month of March during normal business hours (Monday through Friday 10:00am – 5:00pm).

Dr. Tammy Smithers is Assistant Professor of Art History at Austin Peay State University. She earned the PhD in Italian Renaissance Art History from Temple University in 2012, specializing in Michelangelo. She travels to central Italy regularly for research where she documents her experiences through digital photography. As an art historian with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art, she creates visual art for her own pleasure where her time in Italy also informs her drawings and mixed-media works.

“This gathering of experiences of “My Rome” are a combination of fleeting moments—a gull gliding by my apartment window or a storm rolling into the Forum as I left the Capitoline Museum—and my Roman rituals—eating at my favorite pizzeria for the 50th time or people watching under the shade of Michelangelo’s imposing cornice in Palazzo Farnese for the 500th hour.

Most of these digital photographs were unapologetically captured with a point-and-shoot camera or iPhone as I went about my daily life to and from seminars, conferences, libraries, churches, museums, and markets in the Eternal City. The images were taken during my last five stays in Rome (2007, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2013) and are, like my collection of memories, untitled and undated.”

Mildred & Mables (109 Franklin Street)

Mildred and Mable’s is proud to host Amy Baker of The Busy Bee Monogramming during the March First Thursday Art Walk.

The Busy Bee Boutique was started by a mother, Carol, and her daughter, Amy, in the summer of 2013. The two love gift-giving and always enjoyed shopping together for special and unique gifts; opening a gift shop seemed only natural! It was originally intended to be an internet-based, drop-ship business because Carol was in Clarksville, TN and Amy was in Savannah, GA.

But, it wasn’t long until the two decided to purchase an embroidery machine, then, a vinyl cutter, and finally, a heat press. Drop-shipping was no longer an option! They often attended craft fairs and flea markets in an attempt to introduce people to their shop.

Eventually, Amy re-located to Clarksville and it was just a matter of time before they opened a brick and mortar store. When they had the opportunity to sublet space inside Mildred & Mable’s, they jumped at it! So, there they are, at 109 Franklin Street, looking forward to helping you find just the right gift and wanting you to “bee” happy!
