Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUAthens, GA – Austin Peay State University women’s track and field team got its outdoor season started on a strong foot in the Georgia Relays, Friday, at Spec Towns Track.

The strongest showing belonged to Austin Peay’s triple-jump contingent, which posted the top four marks on the evening.

The quartet was led by sophomore Kaylnn Pitts, who picked up right where she left off during indoor season by winning the event with a 12.22m leap.

She was followed by classmates Chancis Jones (11.91m, second) and Ashleigh Woods (11.81m, third) and freshman Keyondria Ross (11.62m, fourth).

The Lady Govs also put three athletes in the top five in the 100m hurdles, led by sophomore Myiah Johnson. The Nashville native posted a 14.39 run to finish third overall, just ahead of teammates Amia Butler (14.57) and Sonja White (14.83).

“I thought our triple jumpers did a good job coming out of the gate,” said head coach Doug Molnar. “The weather just hasn’t given them a lot of time in the pit this year. And the times for our hurdlers this early in the season were very strong as well.”

Sophomore Autumn Schmelzer posted a personal-best in the first outdoor event of her second campaign in an Austin Peay uniform, with a 41.28m hammer throw that earned her fifth place in the event.

“Autumn got us off to a great start in this meet,” Molnar said. “Her first three throws were better than her previous personal-best, so for her to do that in the first outdoor meet was pretty good.”

In her first outdoor competition as a Lady Gov, freshman Sarah Emily-Woodward was third overall in the 5000m run at 19:30.91; that was better than any of her three 5000m attempts during indoor season.

Action at the Georgia Relays continues Saturday, beginning at 10:00am (CT). Live stats for the event can be found at http://www.spato.us/cresults/2015/ginvite/
