Athens, GA – After a strong Friday, Austin Peay State University’s track and field team got another excellent performance from its jumps group at Spec Towns Track, Saturday, on the final day of competition at the Georgia Relays.
Classmate Kaylnn Pitts, who won the triple jump on Friday, took third at 5.58m (18′ 3.75″).
“The jumpers did a really nice job,” said head coach Doug Molnar. “Both were in mid-season form in the long jump, which was encouraging for this point in the year.”
In its first outdoor relay attempts, Austin Peay athletes showed they will again be a force to be reckoned with in 2015. In the 4x100m event, Austin Peay’s Tamira Wilson-Lamontra Robinson-Erika Adams–Sonja White quartet took third (47.44), while the Lady Govs took the 4x800m title with a school-record 9:25.49 mark thanks to the exploits of Breigh Jones, Molly Jordan, Michaela McGhee and Jessica Gray.
Speaking of Gray, the senior from Memphis placed fifth overall in the 1500m run with a 4:43.36 mark, blowing past her previous best by more than 20 seconds.
“I thought Jessica did a great job,” Molnar said. “Not totally surprising that she did that well, but it was surprising to see how easy it was for her. In the relays, it’s always nice to get a school record and we were able to put some other people in the 4×100, which will give us options down the road.”
In her first 400m hurdle attempt in 2015, senior Natalie Olberding got off to a sharp start with a 1:03.68 run, earning her third-place honors. In the 400m dash, sophomores Terri Morris (57.22) and Wilson (59.32) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
“Olberding ran a nice race,” Molnar said. “It got a little choppy at the end, but it was a nice starting point. We told all the girls before this meet that this would be our ‘Point A’ to build on for the rest of the season. This was a good meet for it, particularly with the weather; coming south definitely helped.”
Austin Peay continues its outdoor schedule next weekend at the Vanderbilt Black and Gold, March 27th-28th, in Nashville, Tennessee.
