Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s softball team will start what is scheduled to be a 10-game home stand, noon, Saturday, when its hosts Morehead State for an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader at Cheryl Holt Field.
The Lady Govs (7-20, 3-7 OVC) comes into the twinbill having gone 4-3 over its last seven games, including a split at Northern Kentucky, Wednesday, while Morehead State (12-15, 3-4 OVC) spilt a pair of one-run games with Cleveland State, Tuesday, and is also 4-3 in its last seven contests.Offensively, Austin Peay is led by reigning OVC Player of the Week Chandler Groves, who is hitting at a .563 clip over her last nine games and has raised her season batting average to .329 overall; her recent performance also includes five doubles, four home runs and 21 RBIs.
Niya Sparks (.318/6 HR/15 RBI), Christiana Gable (.310/6 HR/25 RBI) and Laurel Burroughs (.305/5 HR/18 RBI) also are hitting at .300-or-better over the team’s first 27 games.
The Eagles are led at the plate by Kayla McGuffey, who comes in hitting .378 from the lead-off spot and has a team-best 11 stolen bases, while Karly Thompson (.309/2 HR/12 RBI) is hitting more than .300 on the season.
In the circle, Natalie Ayala leads the Lady Govs pitching staff with a 3-7 mark, a 7.19 ERA and 15 Ks, while Sidney Hooper enters the weekend with a 2-5 record, a 7.94 ERA and 15 Ks.
The Morehead State pitching staff is led by Mackenzie Grossmann (7-5/3.10 ERA/56 K’s) and Tanna Seuferer (5-4/5.30 ERA/35 Ks).
The Lady Govs were scheduled to open the weekend with a home twinbill, Friday, against Eastern Kentucky, but rain forced postponement until April 22nd.
