Nashville Sounds lose Season Opener 7-5 to Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Nashville Strands Bases Loaded To End Game In 7-5 Defeat

Nashville SoundsColorado Springs, CO – The Nashville Sounds’ late-inning comeback fell short as they dropped the 2015 season opener to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox by a 7-5 score at Security Service Field on Thursday night.

The Sounds drew eight walks and outhit the Sky Sox 11-9, but never led on the scoreboard as their all-time Opening Day record dropped to 18-20.

The home team jumped out to a quick 2-0 advantage through the first two frames. Sky Sox first baseman Matt Clark gave his team the lead with a solo shot in the first and shortstop Luis Sardinas added an RBI single in the second.

Nashville answered back in the third by scoring their first run of the season courtesy of a Max Muncy (1-for-3, 3B, RBI, 2 BB) RBI triple. The three-bagger plated Matt Angle (2-for-4, R, BB), who had walked to lead off the inning, and put the Sounds deficit at 2-1 after three innings.

The Sky Sox extended their lead with a trio of runs in the fourth and two tallies in the seventh, taking advantage of two Nashville errors. Colorado Springs finished the night by going 5-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

The Sounds collected seven of their 11 hits in the last two innings, scoring three runs between the eighth and ninth frames. They ended the night by leaving 13 runners on base though, including stranding the bags packed to end the game. Nashville got multi-hit games from Jason Pridie (2-for-5, R), Kent Matthes (2-for-5, R, 2B), Bryan Anderson (2-for-4, 2 R, 2B, RBI), Joey Wendle (2-for-5, 2 RBI, 2B) and Angle, but their efforts turned up short in the loss.

Chris Bassitt (L, 5.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) had a bumpy outing in his Triple-A debut on Thursday night. After striking out Matt Long looking to begin the game, the right-hander never really settled in. He allowed three runs (one earned) in the fourth before ending his start with a scoreless fifth.

Switch-pitcher Pat Venditte saw his first action in a Sounds’ uniform. The ambidextrous hurler delivered 1.2 scoreless innings, posting two walks and two strikeouts without allowing a hit.

The Sounds and Sky Sox are at it again tomorrow night from Security Service Field. Nashville left-hander Barry Zito will return to the mound after sitting out all of the 2014 season. He will go up against John Ely. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35pm CST.
