Nashville Sounds lose to Oklahoma City Dodgers 6-5 in extra innings

Hernandez Walks-Off With 10th Inning Single

Nashville SoundsOklahoma City, OK – For the second straight night it took extra innings to declare a winner between the Nashville Sounds and Oklahoma City Dodgers at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Unlike Tuesday night, it was the home team that came out on top, 6-5.

The Sounds led much of the game, putting up five early runs on Freddy Garcia. Garcia was thrust into the start  – despite pitching three innings just two nights before  – when Dodgers’ probable starter Carlos Frias was promoted to the MLB squad this morning.

Billy Burns (2-for-4, 2 R) hit the first pitch of the game down the line and did not stop till he was at third base. Joey Wendle (1-for-4,  3 RBI) drove him in with a sacrifice fly during the next at bat. The Sounds were not done in the inning however.

Max Muncy drew his league-leading ninth walk of the season and Jason Pridie (3-for-5, R, SB) singled to send him to third. Pridie would next steal second base to get in scoring position. Kent Matthes (1-for-5, 2 RBI, SB) then delivered a two-run single to give the Sounds a 3-0 advantage.

Garcia was not the only former multiple-time AL All-Star pitching in the game, his counterpart was Sounds lefty Barry Zito who sent the Dodgers down 1-2-3 in the first inning.

The Sounds looked for more insurance in the second. Anthony Aliotti walked and Burns doubled to get them both in to scoring position. Wendle stepped to the plate looking to add to his league-leading RBI total and he did, knocking in both runs (total now 11) on his second triple of the season. It was the last time the Sounds would score.

Dodgers’ left fielder Kyle Jensen (2-for-4, 2 2B, 2 R, RBI) helped the Dodgers chip away at the lead. He drew an eight-pitch walk off Zito in the sixth inning that prompted Oklahoma City’s first chance at taking the lead.

Brock Huntzinger came on for Zito (5.2 IP 5 H 4 ER 2 BB 5 K) with two outs in the frame. He struggled with his command early on – giving up two walks and a single that loaded the bases for the Dodgers. He then fell behind Darnell Sweeney 3-0 before battling back to strike the Dodgers second baseman out, preserving the lead.

The Dodgers tied the game in the 8th inning when O’Koyea Dickson (3-for-5, 2 R, 2 RBI) took Fernando Rodriguez deep. The Dodgers almost walked-off in the ninth, but Kevin Whelan struck out Matt Carson to leave the bases loaded.

Whelan (0-1) found himself in the same situation in the tenth. Two singles and an intentional walk to Sweeney loaded the bases for Kiki Hernandez with one out. With the infield in, Hernandez hit a single up the middle and Buck Britton scored to end the game.

Josh Ravin (1-0) was the winning pitcher for Oklahoma City. He and the Dodgers bullpen combined to throw eight scoreless innings on the night.

The Sounds (4-3) and Dodgers (5-2) wrap up the final game of their four-game series tomorrow at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Ryan Verdugo (1-0, 2.45 ERA) and Zach Lee (1-0, 1.50 ERA) are the expected pitchers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.?
