The categories were Traditional Bed Quilt, Non-Traditional Bed Quilt, Art/Wall Quilt and a Best of Show. Prizes include $100.00 for first place and $50.00 for second place in each of the three categories. The Best of Show winner got a $200.00 prize.

This year’s Best of Show winner was “Pennies from Heaven” by Audra Langley.

Langley’s quilt is a mixed textile of cotton with hand wool applique on the borders and on each block. The dominate block within the quilt was lovebirds. She worked solid for 4 months, from January to April.

When asked about winning, Langley said, “Oh gosh, I’m thankful. It’s a great show with some wonderful exhibits. There are some really fine exhibits here. I think everyone done well. I appreciate everyone entering.”

The Traditional Bed Quilt winner was “The B’s Joing the Navy” by Nancy Beecher.

"Southwest Stars" by Kay Jay came in first for Non-Traditional Bed Quilt.

I’m just thrilled about winning. I’m flabbergasted. It is an original design by Carol Thurston. She calls it Brian’s Star because her son asked her to design this quilt from a picture and her son’s name is Brian,” stated Jay.

"Butterflies and Lilies" by Linda Bridges came in first for Art/Wall Quilt.

“Butterflies and Lilies” by Linda Bridges won the Art/Wall Quilt category.

“Anytime you win anything it’s great. It’s just fantastic,” said Bridges. “I started the quilt 2 years ago, in 2012 and then I put it up. I actually finally finished it last year.”

“It’s an original pattern. The monarchs butterfly inspiration came to me from a picture my brother took and he told me I could use it. It took me forever to get the background. I had to make 2-3 throw away quilts. It took a long time to complete,” stated Bridges.

Quilts of the Cumberland is always striving to increase their number of quilts each year to make a better, bigger show. They welcome the community to enter or come by for a visit.

If you missed this year’s exhibit or want to take part, then keep an eye on the Rivers and Spires website for next year’s Quilts of the Cumberland Quilt Show.
