Brad Mills Produces Team’s Third Quality Start In Last Four Games
Nashville, TN – The Sounds fell victim to a four-run seventh inning at the hands of the Cubs on Thursday night, as Iowa stole the series finale at First Tennessee Park, 4-1.
Nashville dropped to 10-17 overall and 4-3 in series finales. They produced just four hits and struck out in 11 at-bats in the defeat.
Pitching took precedence for the Sounds once again though, as Brad Mills was fantastic on the bump. The left-hander notched the Sounds’ third quality start in the last four games by going 6.1 innings with five hits, two runs, two walks and five strikeouts.
Nashville had only two quality starts through the entire month of April. Despite the strong outing, Mills suffered the loss and dropped to 0-4 on the year.Nashville once again snatched the early lead in the series finale. Second baseman Joey Wendle stepped in and ripped his team-leading fourth home run of the season to right-centerfield. The solo shot bumped Wendle’s RBI total to 19, extended his hitting streak to nine games and gave the Sounds a 1-0 lead.
Newcomer Craig Gentry went hitless at the plate but made up for it in the field. The centerfielder robbed Taylor Teagarden of extra-bases in the top of the fourth by climbing the right-centerfield wall and coming back with the ball. Gentry then took a hit away from Adron Chambers the next inning with a sliding grab in shallow center.
The Cubs put up a four runs on four hits in the seventh inning to go ahead in the ball game. The big inning was capped by an Arismendy Alcantara two-run shot. The visitors held onto the lead and improved to 13-14 on the season.
Both teams were limited offensively through most of the contest, as both Mills and Cubs’ starter Tsuyoshi Wada were strong. Wada, who is on rehab assignment, managed 5.2 innings of one-run ball. Andy Parrino, Blake Forsythe and Wendle were the only Sounds players to acquire hits.
Nashville opens a four-game set with the Round Rock Express tomorrow night at First Tennessee Park. The 7:05pm contest will feature Jarrod Parker (0-0, 6.23) in his second rehab start. The right-hander will be opposed by Ross Wolf in the series opener.
