Nashville Sounds lose to late Iowa Cubs Rally, 3-2

Nashville Sounds’ Pat Venditte Tosses Season-High 5 K’s

Nashville SoundsDes Moines, IA – Down 2-0, with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Iowa Cubs rallied to beat the Sounds 3-2 at Principal Park on Wednesday.

Sounds pitching held the Cubs to just two hits through eight innings of play. Ryan Verdugo pitched well on limited rest, yielding just one hit and striking out three over 4.1 innings. Switch pitcher Pat Venditte threw 3.2 scoreless innings of relief, surrendering just a double. He recorded a season-high five strikeouts and was in line to secure his second win.

Ryan Roberts, affectionately known as “Tatman” for his dozens of tattoos, drove in Joey Wendle for the Sounds first run of the ballgame in the top of the fourth. He now has three two-out RBIs in the past two games. Nashville would add a run courtesy of a throwing error by Christian Villanueva that allowed Alden Carrithers to score in the eighth.

Ryan Cook came on to attempt to record his fourth save. The Sounds were 8-0 in games he had appeared in.

Rubi Silva led off the frame with a single and it appeared he would be stranded there after Cook got two quick outs. Javy Baez then singled to push Silva to third and the potential winning run came to the plate. Cook plunked Villanueva, who left the game in considerable pain. With the bases now loaded, former Vanderbilt commodore Mike Baxter drew a walk to cut the lead in half. The outfield came in with the potential winning run now in scoring position, but it did not matter. Lake lined one to right and the Cubs walked off.

The two teams will play another matinee on Thursday. The Sounds will send the rehabbing Sean Nolin to the hill. The Cubs will counter with a fellow rehabbing southpaw, Tsuyoshi Wada (0-3, 3.25). First pitch is scheduled for 12:08pm.
