Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUClarksville, TN – Four Austin Peay State University school records fell on Day One of an oft-interrupted 2015 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships at Governors Stadium.

At the close of the first day of competition, Austin Peay sits in sixth place with 19 points; Southeast Missouri leads the women’s event with 38.5 points at the close of Day One, followed by Murray State and Eastern Illinois (32).

The event was stopped twice due to inclement weather in the area on the first day of competition.

In the long jump, sophomore Chancis Jones grabbed Austin Peay’s first gold medal of the meet, passing Sherlonda Johnson’s 2005 school-record with a 6.29m (20-7.75) leap, which also serves as the OVC Outdoor Championship record, breaking Sherrie Bingham’s mark from the 1988 Championship.

Jones took the top spot on the podium – and moved up to 14th nationally in the event based on marks entering the weekend – while classmate Kaylnn Pitts, the 2015 OVC Outdoor Co-Female Athlete of the Year, took bronze with a personal-best 6.10m (20-0.25) leap, which would be good for 35th regionally.

Sophomore Amia Butler brought home points with a sixth-place, 5.75m (18-10.50) leap.

In the 100m dash, senior Erika Adams broke her own school record with an 11.64 mark, qualifying first for Saturday’s final. Junior Kymmalett Ross became the second Lady Gov to break the 12-second barrier, qualifying sixth with an 11.99.

It was yet another big day for junior Breigh Jones. She broke the school record in the 200m with a 23.93 qualifying mark – the first sub-24 second run in the 200m outdoor in APSU history – and, naturally, qualified first for Saturday’s 400m final with 54.74 mark. She’ll be joined in the finals by sophomore Terri Morris (sixth, 57.22) in the 400m and junior Lamontra Robinson (eight, 24.75) in the 200m.

Not to be outdone, sophomore Myiah Johnson squeaked past Roni Hopkins’ 2001 school record with a 13.76 preliminary 100m hurdles run, passing Hopkins by one-hundredth of a second for the top spot. She qualified third for Saturday’s final, where she will be joined by Butler (14.25, sixth).

Butler concluded the first day of competition in the heptathlon in fifth place, with 2802 points. She was second in the heptathlon 100m hurdles (14.20) and in the heptathlon 200m (25.65).

Senior Jessica Gray also qualified for Saturday’s final; she finished sixth in 800m preliminary action with a 2:12.29 run.

Action continues Saturday, beginning at 8:00am with the postponed women’s javelin. The women’s pole vault, which was interrupted by lightning on Friday, will resume at 12:30 p.m. All other events will go on as scheduled, Saturday, from Governors Stadium and Pettus Park.
