Nashville Sounds offense stalls in 4-1 loss to New Orleans Zephyrs

Alden Carrithers Extends His Team-Best Hitting Streak To 13 Games

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – Nashville’s offense was halted and the Sounds ran into a strong pitching performance on Monday night, as New Orleans grabbed a 4-1 win at First Tennessee Park.

New Orleans (1st, 3.00) and Nashville (4th, 3.85) both entered the game among league-leaders in team pitching, and the two staffs proved their dominance. Brad Mills notched his team-leading third straight quality start, but still suffered his fifth loss of the year. He tossed 7.0 innings with two runs on six hits. The left-hander induced three ground ball double plays, but also issued four walks.

Zephyrs’ starter Jose Urena, who made his Major League debut with the Marlins earlier in the season, seemed to baffle Nashville hitters all night. The home team collected one run off the right-hander through 7.0 frames. Urena recorded 12 groundball outs to boost his record to 4-0.

New Orleans plated the first run of the contest in the fourth, but Nashville quickly responded in the home half of the frame. After Scott Sizemore knocked in Vinny Rottino with two away to put the Zephyrs ahead, Alden Carrithers extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a leadoff triple. Following a Kent Matthes walk, Jason Pridie singled a ball through the right side to bring the designated hitter home. The two teams were all square at 1-1 after four.

The tie was short-lived however, as the Zephyrs manufactured a run when Austin Wates singled, stole a base and was driven in by Miguel Rojas. The score remained at 2-1 until New Orleans padded the lead with a pair of runs in the eighth off reliever Pat Venditte. It was the first time the switch-pitcher allowed more than one run in an outing and it put his ERA at 1.75 through 12 games.

In the end, Nashville’s five through nine hitters went a combined 1-for-17 with five strikeouts and one walk. Carrithers and Joey Wendle collected four of the six Nashville hits and the Sounds drew just two walks.

Nashville and New Orleans conclude their four-game series on Tuesday at First Tennessee Park before enjoying a league-wide off day on Wednesday. Right-hander Chris Bassitt (1-2, 4.74) will go against left-hander Adam Conley. The two teams will meet again in New Orleans on Saturday, June 6th.
