Rain doesn’t dampen spirits at 21st Annual APSU Governors Bass Tournament

APSU Governors Bass TournamentBuchanan, TN – The 21st annual Austin Peay State University Governors Bass Tournament was held in the rain Saturday, May 16th on Kentucky Lake. Boats launched from Paris Landing State Park at 6:00am. There were 212 boats registered for the event and 200 competed for the $12,000 in prize money.

The weather was clear some but mainly held to a steady rain for most of the day with periods of light drizzle. Despite the conditions, the fishermen were in high spirits at the start of the event.

“It’s going well so far considering the rain,” said Clarksville Bass Club’s Kenneth Head. “It seems to always want to rain on Austin Peay bass tournament day.”

“This is so much fun. And it’s alot more fun for me probably since I get to see all the great fish coming in,” stated APSU President Dr. Alisa White. “I have found my people. These are my people. I love the fish. I thank you guys for doing this for Austin Peay.”

At the end of the day, it was team of Jeffery Archie and Zach Parker that came in 1st with a total weight of 26.06 lbs to earn the $5,000 grand prize. Steven Hudson and Micah Smith came in 2nd to take home $1,500 with a weight of 22.64 lbs. 3rd place and $1,000 went to Bill Lyons and Dennis Black who came in with 21.23 lbs.

The team with the big bass was James Christian and Shane Melton who had a 7.09 lbs catch that earned them $1218.00. Terry Pratt and Dennis Noel took second place with a 7.08 lbs catch that hooked them a $812.00 payday.

The grand door prize of $2,000 went to Peyton Gibbs of Dickson, TN.

Justin Self won a Hummingbird Helix 5 Fish Finder GPS donated by Tailwater Marine valued at $299.99.

A $400.00 gift certificate from Gateway Tire & Service went to Terry Anderson. Other door prizes included $25.00 alignment gift certificates, bait packs from RyPro Fishing, APSU Govs jacket, APSU seat cushions, and several other gift certificates.

All participants received a $5.00 gift certificate from The Tackle Box.

“I was involved in starting this 21 years ago. This has been a great event. I would like to say thanks to each of you that fished through the years. You have done a tremendous job and we appreciate your support for Austin Peay State University,” stated Roy Gregory. “We could not have pulled this off without Ken Head and the Clarksville Bass Club, the Governors Club or our sponsors.”

With the support from the community and the Governors Club, the Austin Peay Governors Bass Tournament has been able to raise nearly $500,000 in the past 21 years.

“Thank you very much for coming out today. Thank you for you passion and for coming back year after year to support this fishing tournament. Thank you very much for supporting Austin Peay Sports,” said APSU Athletics Director Derek van der Merwe.
