Nashville Sounds get 2-1 walk-off win over New Orleans Zephyrs

Nashville Sounds Bullpen Pitches 6.1 Scoreless Innings in Win

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – Kent Matthes snapped a 0-for-18 streak with an RBI double and the Sounds walked-off with a 2-1 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs on Tuesday night at First Tennessee Park.

Sounds leadoff hitter Matt Carson – who had already been on base three times in the game without even registering a hit – led off the ninth with a double. Next batter, Joey Wendle flew out to left field and the walk-off was suddenly in doubt; Nashville had twice already squandered bases loaded with one out situations on the night.

Matthes put a charge into a Nick Wittgren offering and it appeared center fielder Issac Galloway was going to catch it for the second out of the inning. Galloway’s first two steps were in, and he quickly realized he had misjudged the liner.

He tried to get back, but it was too late. The ball hit off the top of his glove, Sounds fan’s concerns were unfounded and the Sounds dugout swarmed Matthes.

Nashville initially trailed in this one when Brady Shoemaker took Sean Nolin deep down the left field line to give the Zephyrs an early 1-0 lead back in the top of the second.

Nolin pitched just 2.2 innings, throwing 59 pitches – 32 of which were for strikes – as he continues his comeback from offseason sports hernia surgery.  He struck out three Zephyrs batters on the night.

It took until the 5th inning for the Sounds to finally tag Zephyrs starter Adam Conley. Andy Parrino led off the frame with a double that hit the top of the wall in right field. He came around to score on catcher Luke Carlin’s RBI single.  Carlin had his best game of the season, hitting 2-for-4 and throwing out Derek Dietrich attempting to steal second base.

Conley baffled Sounds hitters all night long, giving up just the one run over six innings, but he was matched by Chris Bassitt. The prospect acquired in the Jeff Samardzija trade with the Chicago White Sox threw 4.1 scoreless innings, surrendering just one hit and striking out five.

R.J. Alvarez picked up his second win of the season, his first came back against New Orleans in his Sounds debut on April 28th.

Nashville (15-24) has a scheduled off day tomorrow. They will play game one of a four-game set at Fresno on Thursday. Barry Zito is the Sounds expected starter for the 9:05pm matchup.
