Austin Peay State University’s Breigh Jones named Athletic of the Week

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Junior sprinter Breigh Jones, of the Austin Peay State University women’s track and field team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Jones emerged from last weekend’s 2015 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with some serious hardware, earning two gold medals and two silver medals alongside her 2015 OVC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year honor. She led Austin Peay to a third-place finish in the first OVC Track and Field Championship hosted by Austin Peay since 2001.

On the first day of competition, she took over the 200m dash record for Austin Peay, becoming the first Lady Gov to break the 24-second barrier with a 23.93 mark.

Saturday, she kicked off the day with a gold medal in the 4x100m dash (45.66), then defended her 2014 OVC Championship in the 400m dash with a 53.70 mark to make it back-to-back golds in the event. She concluded the final day of competition by running the anchor leg of Austin Peay’s silver-medal earning 4x400m relay team (season-best 3:46.11 mark), and was responsible for 36 of Austin Peay’s 119 team points.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included

  • Sophomore jumper Chancis Jones, of the track and field team, broke Sherlonda Johnson’s 2005 school-record and Sherrie Bingham’s 1988 OVC Championships record in the long jump with a 6.29m (20-7.75) leap, taking gold in the event.
  • Junior pitcher Jared Carkuff, of the baseball team, scattered six hits over eight innings, throwing 129 pitches in the process, picking up his fifth win of 2015 in a 9-5 decision against SIU Edwardsville, May 9th.
