Nashville Sounds fall to Fresno Grizzlies in extra innings, 3-2

Nashville Sounds Come One Out Away From Victory Before Fresno Delivers Walk-Off Hit

Nashville SoundsFresno, CA – Brad Mills delivered a stunning start and Kent Matthes roped a run-scoring double in the 11th, but the Fresno Grizzlies scored a pair of runs late to walk-off over the Sounds on Saturday night at Chukchansi Park with a 3-2 win.

Despite Mills’ 1-5 record this season, the lefty was coming in riding a quality start streak through his last three outings. He made it four straight by throwing 7.0 shutout innings with six strikeouts and no runs. Mills made it through his eighth start of 2015 with just 74 pitches, 52 going for strikes, never walking a batter. The veteran took the no-decision, but lowered his ERA to 3.91.

The Sounds backed their starter by grabbing a run in the third. Matt Carson drew a leadoff walk, Luke Carlin was hit by a pitch, Anthony Aliotti followed two batters later with a single and Joey Wendle lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield to go on top, 1-0.

The two offenses were suppressed until the eighth inning when the Grizzlies got a run off of Nashville’s relief. Joe Sclafani evened things up with a run-scoring groundout in the frame.

The teams had several chances late, but Nashville jumped ahead in the 11th. Alden Carrithers worked a two-out single and plated when Matthes slapped his 14th double of the season.

The Grizzlies were not through though, using the dramatic walk-off win to defeat the Sounds. R.J. Alvarez retired the first two batters of the inning, but then allowed the next four batters to reach.

Nashville dropped to 5-10 in one-run affairs and 2-4 in extra-inning contests. It was just the Sounds third loss in 15 games when they were ahead after seven innings.

The two teams wrap up their four-game set tomorrow at Chukchansi Park. The pitching matchup will feature Chris Bassitt (1-2, 3.86) and Dan Straily. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05pm.
