Nashville Sounds shuts out Sacramento River Cats, 3-0

Veteran Barry Zito Throws 6.0 Shutout Innings To Earn The Victory

Nashville SoundsSacramento, CA – Barry Zito was spectacular in his return to Sacramento and Nashville led from the second inning on, as the Sounds shutout the River Cats on Tuesday night at Raley Field, 3-0.

Combining yesterday’s 5-0 win with tonight’s victory marked the first time since June 28th-29th, 2014 that Nashville has collected back-to-back shutout wins. It was the team’s fourth shutout win this season and it helped improve their record to 18-27.

A shutout would not have been possible without terrific starting pitching for Nashville and Zito seemed to be up to the task in the victory.

The 37-year old veteran pitched for the River Cats in 2000 and many of his fans seemed to still be around, as he received cheers and encouragement all game long. His 101 pitches allowed him to go 6.0 shutout innings with three hits and five strikeouts.

The left-hander improved his record to 2-4 during his league-leading 10th start of the season. His offense backed him early too.

The Sounds produced two runs of support in the second inning. Jason Pridie and Kent Matthes led off the frame with back-to-back walks. Pridie eventually got caught in a rundown, as Matthes moved up to third and Niuman Romero took second.

With two away, Anthony Aliotti continued his hot streak at the plate by driving a single that scored the pair. The runs batted in were the first baseman’s seventh and eighth RBIs in the last 10 games.

Nashville tacked on an insurance run in the seventh when Ryan Roberts hit a sacrifice fly that plated Matt Carson. The visitors held the 3-0 advantage and improved to 4-12 when being outhit by an opponent.

Through the first 18 innings of this series, Nashville’s staff has yet to allow a run. Ryan Verdugo delivered 1.2 innings of relief, while R.J. Alvarez wiggled his way out of a few jams and notched his first save of the season.

Game three of the four-game series between Nashville and Sacramento takes place tomorrow night at Raley Field. Zach Neal (2-0, 1.69) makes his third start of the season for the Sounds. The River Cats are scheduled to go with rehabbing starter Jake Peavy. First pitch is scheduled for 9:05pm.
