Jacksonville, FL – Junior sprinter Breigh Jones, of the Austin Peay State University track and field team, saw her 2015 campaign come to a close in the opening round of the NCAA East Preliminary, Thursday, at Hodges Stadium.
A Memphis native, Jones finished 28th overall in the 400m dash in the opening round heats with a season-best 53.63 run. After qualifying 40th, Jones improved her standing in the region 12 spots, besting three of the top-25 400m competitors based on marks coming into the day. She was less than two-tenths of a second from earning a qualifying mark for Friday’s quarterfinal.
Jones finished fifth in the fourth heat, coming out of the eighth lane. In a competitive heat highlighted by top quarterfinal qualifier Kala Funderburk (51.72) out of Florida State and VCU’s Kiara Porter, who was the sixth-best overall qualifier at 52.18, Jones bested two in-state foes in Middle Tennessee’s Loveth Odia (sixth in the heat, 54.28) and Tennessee’s Felecia Majors (eighth, 54.67).
While Jones’ season – a season that included gold medals in the 400m dash at the OVC Indoor and Outdoor Championships and OVC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year honors – comes to a close, Thursday was just the beginning for Austin Peay’s Sunshine State adventures. Sophomores Kaylnn Pitts and Chancis Jones will compete in the long jump semifinals Friday, 6:00pm (CT) at Hodges Stadium.
