Clarksville, TN – David Midlick, Austin Peay State University’s newest women’s basketball head coach, has hired Kayla Oxenrider as the first assistant coach on his staff, Monday.
Oxenrider, a native of Ashland, Pennsylvania, joins the Austin Peay women’s basketball program after one season as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at St. Francis University.
“I am especially thankful for the opportunity to work with the Austin Peay women’s basketball program,” said Oxenrider. “This is my first experience living outside of Pennsylvania and I can’t think of a better situation than to be working with Coach Midlick. I am excited for the chance to coach and mentor these athletes every day and I am eager to get started.”
“When you’re out recruiting you notice those coaches who are the first in the gym and the last out and they make an impression on you – Kayla is one of those coaches,” said Midlick. “I had the opportunity to talk with her on different recruiting trips and her knowledge of the game and enthusiasm for coaching and mentoring student-athletes stood out. I believe the team will be excited
She began her coaching career at Division III Albright College in 2013-14 where she assisted with planning daily practice and game plans, budgeting, fundraising and administering academic program. With Oxenrider on staff, the Lions posted a 13-12 record, the program’s first winning season since 2008-09.
Oxenrider was a four-year starter at Bloomsburg University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in 2013. She started each of the 117 games during her four seasons and the Huskies posted an 88-29 record during her career. Oxenrider finished her career with 1,327 points – eighth all-time in program history – and her 169 three-pointers and 267 assists both were among the program’s top 10 career marks.
Twice a second-team all-conference selection, Oxenrider helped lead Bloomsburg to NCAA Division II tournament appearances in both 2011-12 and 2012-13 – the program’s first NCAA appearances since 2000-01. The Huskies also posted three conference divisional titles and one conference championship during her career.
