Nashville Sounds rally in the ninth to defeat Oklahoma City Dodgers 3-2

Chris Bassitt Fans Eight Over Five Plus Innings

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Sounds walked off 3-2 over the Oklahoma City Dodgers in extraordinary fashion at First Tennessee Park on Friday night.

The Sounds led 1-0 for much of the game but lost the lead when Ryan Cook failed to complete a four-out save. The Dodgers stole two bases in the frame, getting runs via a sacrifice fly from top prospect Corey Seager and a triple off the bat of Chris Heisey.

Trailing 2-1 with two outs in the ninth, it appeared the game was over, but to their credit Craig Gentry and the Sounds did not quit.

The Sounds outfielder singled, recording his third-straight multi-hit game in the process. The speedy outfielder then went to third via a Joey Wendle single, setting the stage for the unexpected.

With Ryan Roberts down to his final strike, Dodgers reliever Chin-hui Tsao went for the strikeout. The move backfired. The wild pitch went to the backstop and Gentry sprinted home.

Catcher Brian Ward threw to Tsao covering, but the ball hit Gentry and caromed towards the Sounds dugout. The ball rolled down the stairs, Wendle was awarded the plate and the Sounds walked off for the third time this season at First Tennessee Park.

In the excitement, it is almost possible to forget how phenomenal Sounds starter Chris Bassitt was for Nashville. The right-hander threw five scoreless innings, surrendering just two hits and fanning eight. His outing was ended by a 90-minute rain delay after the Sounds’ top prospect had thrown just two pitches in the top of the sixth. Dan Otero picked up right where the Sounds’ starter left off, striking out the side when the action resumed.

In addition to an exciting baseball game and post-game fireworks, fans were treated to a famous guest. Baseball legend Rickey Henderson donned the Sounds’ “Music City” alternate top and coached first base for much of the game. The Hall of Famer is currently a special instructor for the Sounds’ parent club, the Oakland Athletics. Henderson will be signing autographs before the Sounds’ game on Sunday.

The two teams will square off once again tomorrow night at First Tennessee Park. Sean Nolin is expected to start for the Sounds. He will be opposed by Ian Thomas. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm.
