Nashville Sounds fall 4-3 to Colorado Sky Sox at First Tennessee Park

Joey Wendle Homers in Loss

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – Nashville and Colorado Springs combined for 24 hits on Thursday night at First Tennessee Park. Unfortunately for the Sounds, the Sky Sox got the better share, winning 4-3.

Sounds southpaw Sean Nolin was scheduled to start for Nashville, but was placed on the disabled list with a left shoulder injury yesterday. In need of a starter, the Oakland A’s acquired Parker Frazier from the Arizona Diamondbacks in a trade and optioned him to Nashville.

The right-hander struggled in his first two innings of work, giving up a run in each of the frames on six hits, but picked up two strikeouts while working a scoreless third.

The Sounds tied the game in the latter half of the frame on a Joey Wendle two-run homer.

The Sounds were not even done in the frame. Jason Pridie – who in the second inning slid headfirst into first to earn a single – tripled to the left center field gap and then scored when Sky Sox shortstop Yadiel Rivera made a throwing error trying to nab Jake Smolinski at first.

The Sky Sox continued to hit Frazier well, tacking the tying run on in the fourth and then taking the lead in the fifth. With the bases loaded and a run in, Steve Scarsone went to his pen in an attempt to limit the damage and it worked out big time. On his 27th birthday, Brock Huntzinger came out of the pen and stranded all three runners.

Huntzinger would pitch a scoreless sixth inning, finishing his outing with three strikeouts. Frazier exited the game having surrendered 12 hits, the most by a Sounds starter this season.

Fresh off an appearance in the Texas League All-Star Game last night, Carson Blair made his Triple-A debut as the Nashville catcher. The 25-year-old looked good behind the plate, gunning down Rivera when he attempted to steal in the sixth and then recording his first hit via a broken bat blooper to center in the eighth.

The blooper advanced Max Muncy, who played his first game with Nashville since being promoted to Oakland on April 25th, to second. Following the Blair single, Niuman Romero walked to load the bases with one out. Craig Gentry hit a sharp liner at Elian Herrera and Muncy tagged up. The throw to the plate was on target and the potential tying run was doubled up at the plate.

Barry Zito will get the ball tomorrow night for a Sounds team that will be wearing a commemorative Independence Day jersey. The game-worn jerseys will be bid on via auction during the night’s game, while the first 4,000 fans will receive a Sounds Independence Day shirt courtesy of SomethingInked.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm and a special Fox 17 Independence Day Fireworks show presented by the Nashville International Airport will follow the game.
