TDOT announces First Closures set for I-40 Fast Fix 8 Project in Downtown Nashville

Bridge Rehabilitation to Begin at Jo Johnston Avenue

The closures are scheduled as follows

  • Friday, July 24th at 8:00pm through Monday, July 27th at 6:00am.
  • Friday, July 31st at 8:00pm through Monday, August 3rd at 6:00am.

I-40 will be closed from the I-40/I-65 split west of downtown to the I-40/I-65 split south of downtown.

Jo Johnston Avenue will be closed from 11th Avenue to 16th Avenue.

***ALL WORK IS WEATHER DEPENDENT***

A final decision for each closure will be made the Wednesday before the scheduled work.

During the closures, all traffic will be detoured to the north and east of downtown. Downtown-specific traffic traveling I-40 West will be able to exit at Demonbreun Street, but will not be able to re-enter I-40 after exiting. To reduce congestion at the Demonbreun Street exit, motorists are urged to utilize other exits for downtown access or follow detour routes to avoid the area. Message boards will alert motorists to the closures and alternate routes. Detours are also available online. Drivers are advised to plan ahead.

The closures will allow crews to set barrier rail, remove deteriorated concrete from the bridge decks, and then replace box beams and deck panels. The repairs are part of a $62 million project to rehabilitate eight bridges built in 1968. Work will begin at the bridges over Jo Johnston Avenue. Bridges over Clinton Street, Herman Street, and Charlotte Avenue will be repaired during subsequent closures. Using expedited construction, the project will require a total closure of the south loop of I-40 for 13 weekends from now through June 2016.

All scheduled closures are tentative, dependent on weather and project progress.
