Pacific Coast League falls 4-3 to International League to win 2015 Triple-A All-Star Game

Triple-A All-Star GameOmaha, NB – The International League rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Pacific Coast League 4-3 in front of a sellout crowd of 9,023 fans in the First National Bank Triple-A All-Star Game at Werner Park.

The Sounds lone All-Star representative, outfielder Jason Pridie started and played the entire game. The 31-year-old went 2-for 5 on the night, with a pair of singles.

The PCL held a 3-1 advantage heading into the ninth, but with the bases loaded Kyle Roller delivered a two-run single up the middle to even the score. After a pitching change, Lehigh Valley’s Tyler Henson singled home Indianapolis’ Alen Hanson for the go-ahead run.

Roller, a first baseman from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, was named the IL’s Top Star for the contest, after going 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

Reno’s Peter O’Brien was chosen the Top Star from the PCL side.

O’Brien put the PCL up 3-1 in the bottom of the eighth, when he belted a two-run home run onto the left field berm.

The late offense from both sides came after a string of dominant pitching performances to start the game. IL starting pitcher Erik Johnson of the Charlotte Knights tossed two shutout inning to go along with two strikeouts. PCL starter Carlos Pimentel punched out four batters in his two innings of work, setting a new record for an Iowa Cubs pitcher in a Triple-A All-Star Game. The PCL and IL pitching staffs combined for 21 strikeouts on the night, one away from tying the record set most recently in 2012.

The first run of the game was produced by Buffalo’s Matt Hague when he delivered an RBI single in the opening frame to give the IL an early lead. Cristhian Adames ended the IL’s shutout bid on the first-pitch of the bottom of the sixth, hitting a home run past the left field corner. The home run marked the second straight year an Albuquerque Isotope has homered in the sixth inning of the All-Star Game, after Joc Pederson accomplished the feat in Durham.

The International League’s victory gives them a 11-7 advantage over the Pacific Coast League in Triple-A All-Star Games since the format switched from AL vs. NL 18 years ago. It’s also the league’s third-consecutive win over the PCL, dating back to the 2013 contest in Reno, Nevada.

The win secures home field advantage for IL’s representing team in the Gildan Triple-A National Championship to be held on Tuesday, September 22nd at Southwest University Park, home of the El Paso Chihuahuas.
