Instant Peay Play: APSU Govs continue to shine in classroom with new school year nearing start

Instant Peay PlayClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s athletic department is just a day or two away from having its first student-athletes of the 2015-16 school year report to begin fall workouts, but that hasn’t kept the classroom accolades from this past year from coming in.

The Ohio Valley Conference announced this past week that 79 Govs and Lady Govs were among a conference record 1,279 student-athletes to be named to the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the 2014-15 school year.

To be named to the honor roll a student-athlete has to carry a 3.25 (on a 4.0 scale) for the whole school year.

More than 10,500 student-athletes have been recognized on the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll during the past 10 years.

While a lot of the credit rightfully goes to the student-athletes that the respective sport coaching staffs recruit, as they balance time with the books, practice times and competition, the academic support of Sonya Bain and her staff help make sure that all APSU student-athletes have the best chance to succeed in the class room.

All 14 of Austin Peay’s teams were represented, led by soccer and baseball, which had 13 and 10 student-athletes respectively named – while Sarah Carpenter, Unjala Lester, Sarah-Emily Woodard, were members of two different sports (cross country and track and field) but only counted once in the schools final total of 79.

Possible honors from the OVC could continue this upcoming week for Austin Peay and its student-athletes, as the conference will announce this week the recipients of the Academic Medal of Honor, the Team Academic Achievement Awards and the Institutional Academic Achievement Award.

The announcement of the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll came just days after the American Volleyball Coaches Association revealed that the Lady Govs volleyball team earned the association’s Team Academic Award for the third straight year and fifth time since 2000.

The AVCA Team Academic Award was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year to honor collegiate and high school volleyball teams that maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale, with Austin Peay also being recognized by the AVCA following the 2001-02, 2003-04 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years.

Austin Peay’s volleyball team had four student-athletes named to the President’s List with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average for the semester, while nine student-athletes named to both the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and Dean’s List.
