Nashville Sounds pull out 8-3 victory over Memphis Redbirds at First Tennessee Park

Barry Zito Hurls Six One-Hit Innings

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN –  Trailing 3-0, the Nashville Sounds scored eight unanswered runs, defeating Memphis 8-3 at First Tennessee Park on Thursday night at First Tennessee Park.

The contest was the completion from a suspended game from the night before. The two teams got through a half-inning of action on Wednesday before rain ended play. In that half-inning on Wednesday, Sounds starter Nate Long was responsible for giving up three runs on two hits, struggling with his control, walking three batters in the frame.

Upon the resumption of play Thursday, Nashville wasted little time cutting into the 3-0 deficit in the bottom of the first. Joey Wendle hit his 30th double of the season, this one rolling down the left field line. He scored two batters later on a Jason Pridie single.

The Redbirds loaded the bases in the top of the third, but Barry Zito stranded them there and the Nashville offense took advantage. Craig Gentry led off the bottom half of the frame with his fourth homer of the campaign, his most in a season since hitting four with Oklahoma City in 2010.

Wendle then tripled and Pridie once again knocked him in, this time hitting a double to tie the game.  Pridie would come around to score on a Brent Morel RBI single and the Sounds led 4-3.

The Sounds extended the lead in the sixth, seventh and eighth. Nate Freiman led off the sixth with a double and scored on next batter Andy Parrino’s single to make it 5-3. Pridie would walk with an out away in the seventh and then execute a textbook hit-and-run with Morel to score from first. Morel then scored on an error by Dean Anna.

The Redbirds made three errors on the night, including an error by Jacob Wilson that led to another Nashville run in the eighth.

While the offense was impressive, Zito may have been even better, hurling six one-hit innings to earn his eighth win. R.J. Alvarez finished it out for the Sounds, tossing two scoreless frames, striking out three.

Thursday night’s regularly-scheduled game, which will be shortened to seven innings, will begin at approximately 9:30pm. Dan Otero (1-0, 1.08) is expected to make his first career start for Nashville. He will be opposed by Tyler Waldron (4-5, 3.73).
