Nashville Sounds lose hit fest to Memphis Redbirds, 7-4

Jason Pridie Raises Season Average To .301 With Three Hits

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Sounds and Redbirds busted out the bats for a combined 25 hits on Friday night at First Tennessee Park but Nashville fell to Memphis, 7-4.

Nashville’s loss evened The Tennessee Lottery I-40 Cup series at 7-7. The Sounds pounded out 10 hits on the night, led by Jason Pridie’s three hits and Max Muncy’s three RBIs.

The top of the Nashville lineup continued to click, scoring a run in the first inning for the fourth straight game. Joey Wendle singled with one away, his seventh hit of the series, and scored when Jake Smolinski dropped a single in shallow right field.

Both teams got their shot with the lead, but Nashville claimed the 3-2 advantage after three innings. Jeremy Hazelbaker scored in the second and doubled home Dan Johnson in the third to grab the Redbirds’ two early runs.

Muncy put the Sounds back on top though, driving home Ryan Roberts and Pridie with a clutch two-run, go-ahead single in the third.

Memphis slowly pulled away by putting up two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth off starter Zach Neal. The right-hander was in search of his eighth win of the season, but took his exit after 5 2/3 innings. He tied a career high by allowing 13 hits, adding seven strikeouts with a season-high 109 pitches.

The defense behind Neal helped keep the game tight early on and Pridie’s glove in right highlighted the play. The right fielder helped maintain the Sounds lead in the fourth when Dean Anna smoked a deep fly with a runner on first. With Pridie booking it back to the track and sizing up the wall, his last second leap ensured an inning-ending snag.

Zach Petrick, Neal’s counterpart on Friday evening, saw Nashville get a base runner in every inning except the second. The 26-year-old left in the seventh frame after completing 6 1/3 innings, surrendering three runs on nine hits and one walk. Petrick had the lead when he left and secured his seventh win of the year.

As the game got deeper, the Sounds bullpen continued their strong streak of recent showings. Pat Venditte allowed one hit and fanned one over 1 1/3 innings of work. Taylor Thompson pitched the eighth and had Memphis score an unearned run without registering a hit.

The bullpen’s string of consecutive innings without an earned run did conclude at 27 however. Reliever Brock Huntzinger fell victim to a leadoff homer from Johnson in the ninth. The first baseman’s 12th bomb this season pushed Memphis’ lead to 7-4.

The Tennessee Lottery I-40 Cup series continues on Saturday night at First Tennessee Park. Cody Martin (0-3, 6.37) will make the start for the Sounds and the ‘Birds are expected to give John Gast (5-8, 5.08) the ball. Game time is scheduled for 6:35pm.
