Austin Peay State University Governors - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University football team put on full pads for Friday morning’s practice at Governors Stadium, the team’s first full-pad outing of the 2015 preseason.

Closing out the first week of practice, head coach Kirby Cannon was complimentary of his charges, acknowledging the youth and noting the veterans helped ease the learning curve.

“I thought it went really well,” Cannon said. “Anytime you have more than 40 newcomers, without a lot of help from your older guys it can be choppy and inefficient but I thought they (the older guys) did a good job of assimilating the kids into the program.

“Right now, our spirits are up. We’ve been working and we’ve been blessed with weather that’s allowed us to practice very hard during our practice times.”

With so many young players in camp, Cannon wanted to ease the newcomers into contact drills before ramping up next week in preparation for the first scrimmage. Among those young players includes a youthful offensive line that’s incorporating 10 new players into the rotation.

“We’ll get to a scrimmage aspect around next Tuesday,” Cannon said. “I don’t want anyone in a scrimmage situation unless they know exactly what they’re doing. We’ll leave what we call a ‘teaching phase’ after the two-a-day (Saturday). We’ll regroup a little on Sunday and start an evaluation phase on Monday.”

Saturday will feature Austin Peay’s first true ‘two-a-day’ of the preseason, with the Governors slated to practice at 9:00am and hit the field again at 3:45pm.
