Red dominates APSU Volleyball’s Red-Black scrimmage, Saturday

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University volleyball head coach Taylor Mott‘s Black Squad posted a 2-1 victory (26-24, 16-25, 15-5) in Sunday afternoon’s Red-Black scrimmage at the Dunn Center.

Freshman middle blocker Kaylee Taff led the Black Squad with 12 kills, posting five kills in both the first and third sets.

Freshman outside hitter Cecily Gable added 10 kills while sophomore middle blocker Kelly Ferguson and senior outside hitter Samantha Strother had eight and five kills respectively.

Senior outside hitter Sammie Ebright led assistant coach Brian Netzler‘s Red Squad with 10 kills. Sophomore middle blocker Ashley Slay followed with seven kills. Senior setter Aubrey Marsellis (five kills), redshirt sophomore Peyton Walker (five), freshman outside hitter Logan Carger (four) and freshman outside hitter Amanda Radich (four) added to the Red Squad’s totals.

“I was pleasantly surprised with the scrimmage,” said Mott. “I saw our seniors did a pretty good job and our freshmen really showed they were capable of playing at this level.”

Austin Peay now has three practices remaining to prepare for its season-opening match – a 3:00pm, Friday contest against Ohio at the Purdue Mortar Board Tournament. The Lady Govs stay in West Lafayette, Indiana. also will include matches against host Purdue and Virginia Commonwealth.

“We have to fine tune a few things,” said Mott. “We haven’t done anything with a set lineup so we have to establish our rotation when we head up to Purdue. Today was a great showing and we did some things really well, but we have a lot of room to improve.”
