Clarksville Parks and Recreation Report for August 30th, 2015

Clarksville Parks and Recreation DepartmentClarksville, TN – The weekly Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department Recreation Report provides Clarksvillians with a glimpse at the activities and events that are available from the Parks and Recreation Department for them to enjoy together as a family.

This weeks highlights include: Final Registration for the Riverfest Juried Art Show, New session of Archery, Living History at Fort Defiance and Float the River.

Final Registration for the Riverfest Juried Art Show closes Monday

The Riverfest Art Experience, featuring both a Juried Art Show (formerly known as Tour d’Art) and a Film Festival, will kick-off Riverfest on Thursday, September 10th with a public art show. The show will begin at 5:00pm at Liberty Park and will include art and films from local talent, food trucks, beer and prizes.

The Juried Art Show showcases the work of local professionals, amateurs, and aspiring artists in four divisions: professional, amateur, senior, and youth. The following categories are open to all divisions:

  • Photography and Digital Media
  • Painting (includes acrylic, oil, and watercolor)
  • Drawing
  • 2D Mixed Media
  • 3D Sculpture and Fiber Arts

Submitted artwork will be juried and artwork will be selected for inclusion as part of the Riverfest Art Experience. First, second, and third place will be awarded in each of the five (5) categories for each division. A limited number of Honorable Mention ribbons may also be awarded. Monetary awards will be given for first place, second place, and third place in the professional, amateur, and youth divisions. Recognition will be given for first place, second place, and third place in the Senior Division.

Pre-registration is required. Final Registration for the Juried Art Show closes on Monday, August 31st, 2015. All submission rules and entry fees for each division are available on the website. Artists may register online by visiting www.clarksvilleriverfest.com or download the application and submit it in person to the Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department.

New session of Archery to be offered at the Kleeman Center

Already learned the fundamentals of archery and looking to build on those newfound skills? Look no further than the Kleeman Community Center’s 8-week, Olympic Archery program beginning September 9th.

Program participants, ages 10-18, will take the next step in their archery journey as they embark on this second-level course that meets at 4:00pm on Mondays and Wednesdays.

The cost is $45.00 for the entire program. Pre-registration is available online at recpro.cityofclarksville.com.

Living History with the 3rd Kentucky at Fort Defiance

Experience history in action at the Fort Defiance Interpretive Center’s Civil War Park on Saturday, September 12th and Sunday, September 13th from 10:00am to 5:00pm.

Throughout the two-day event, the 3rd Kentucky Infantry CSA will be demonstrating Civil War camp life and conducting rifle fire demonstrations.

Float the River with Clarksville Parks and Recreation

Clarksville Parks and Recreation is excited to host not one but two float events for canoe and kayak enthusiasts!

Saturday, September 26th – Red River to McGregor Park (approx. 7 miles)

Participants must drop off canoes/kayaks at 1721 Merrywood Drive by 7:00am then drive their vehicle to the McGregor Park boat ramp. Transportation will be provided and will leave McGregor Park boat ramp area by 7:35am. Plan on being in the water by 8:00am.

Saturday, October 24th – Hickory Point to Liberty Park (approx. 10 miles)

Participants must drop off canoes/kayaks at Hickory Point by 7:00am then drive their vehicle to the Liberty Park boat ramp. Transportation will be provided and will leave Liberty Park boat ramp area by 7:35am. Plan on being in the water by 8:00am.

Participants will need to have their own canoe/kayak & life jacket and the float is FREE of charge. Life jackets must be worn at all times. Need equipment? Call one of the outfitters below:
