Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUPawleys Island, SC – Unable to offset some “big numbers” with birdies, Austin Peay State University women’s golf team got off to a slow start in the first round of Golfweek Program Challenge, Sunday, at the Caledonia Golf and Fish Club.

The Lady Govs were beset by five bogeys and one double bogey and could not counteract it by achieving only six first-round birdies as they shot a first-round 25-over 309, sitting in 13th place in the 18-team tournament.

APSU saw freshman Taylor Goodley lead the way in the first round of her first college tourney, shooting a 3-over 74 on the par-71, 6,002-yard layout. She had a trio of birdies, four bogeys and one double in the round.  She is tied for 19th overall.

Senior Jessica Cathey returned to the site of her first college tournament to shoot a 4-over 75, Sunday. She could muster just one birdie against five bogeys. She is tied for 25th.

“I am very proud of the way Taylor has started her career,” APSU coach Sara Robson said. “She played well but still has room for improvement.

“Jessica did a great job of scoring. She made some clutch putts to save par. We need her to hit more greens tomorrow. We as a team need to hit more greens.”

But those two were the only Lady Govs to break 80, Sunday. Juniors Morgan Kauffman and Morgan Gardner each had rounds of 80 while sophomore AnnaMichelle Moore, who was a stalwart in qualifying, struggled to an 88. The three tallied just two birdies—both by Kauffman—on the day.

“We have high expectations for this team and I know they will make us proud,” Robson said. We look to come out tomorrow a little more relaxed and improve upon today’s score.”

The Golfweek Program Challenge consists of women and men’s teams from 18 NCAA Division I schools playing 54 holes on separate courses. After the completion of the final round, women and men’s team champions will be crowned. But so, too, will be the Program Challenge winner – the school (both men and women’s teams) that has the lowest cumulative score.
